Cartagena

Introduction

Cartagena sits on a natural harbour along the Mediterranean coast in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, in Spain's Region of Murcia. It is the second most populated municipality in that region, and its wider urban and metropolitan area is known as the Campo de Cartagena.

Three days in Cartagena

Day one: Start in Cartagena, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The city sits in the Region of Murcia, on the Iberian Peninsula, and its character comes from the sea and from the Campo that surrounds it. Spend your first day getting your bearings: walk the streets, look out toward the Mediterranean, and let the shape of the place settle before you plan anything further.

Day two: Turn to the Campo. The countryside beyond the city gives you a different sense of the Region of Murcia, away from the port and the coast. Take your time here rather than rushing back to Cartagena, and use the day to understand how the city and its surrounding land relate to one another.

Day three: Return to Cartagena and the Mediterranean. With the Campo and the city both behind you, spend your last day along the water and in the streets you passed through on day one. Keep the itinerary simple: Cartagena, the Mediterranean, and the Region of Murcia within Spain and the Iberian Peninsula are enough for three days.
