Chamartin
Getting around
You rarely need a car in Chamartín. Madrid-Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station is knitted into the city's public transport network, with its own metro stop, local bus stops, a large taxi rank and a substantial underground interchange linking metro and commuter rail. The metro stop, also called Chamartín, is served by Line 1 and Line 10, which between them give you a direct link to the historic centre and the northern business districts. Because the interchange is underground, switching between metro and Cercanías is a matter of following signs rather than leaving the station. Urban buses run by EMT stop at the terminal, useful when you want to stay above ground, and a large taxi rank at the main entrance operates around the clock — the most straightforward door-to-door option if you arrive with luggage or late at night. Madrid does have a modern tram network, but none is identified at or near the station, so plan tram rides as a separate trip.
For rail, it helps to understand the three tiers of service before you buy a ticket. High-speed and long-distance routes run to the north and northwest of Spain — Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country — as well as to Valencia and Alicante, served by operators including AVE, Avlo, Ouigo and Iryo. Regional trains connect the station with Ávila, Segovia, Salamanca and other towns in the Madrid region and nearby autonomous communities, a practical option for day trips. Cercanías commuter rail, served by lines C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4, C-7, C-8 and C-10, gives fast links to Sol, Recoletos, Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios, and is often the quickest way to cross the city — especially useful when transferring between Madrid's two main stations. Buy tickets at the station ticket offices and check official rail information in advance for real-time schedules and routes. If you are basing yourself near the station, you can reach the centre, the Paseo de la Castellana and the airport without driving; Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is a few minutes away by metro or taxi, and the Fundación Canal near Plaza de Castilla, the Kio Towers and the Four Towers business area are all in the vicinity.
Three days in Chamartin
Day one: Arrive into Chamartín, the station that anchors this northern district of Madrid. Because it is served by Cercanías, the Metro and EMT buses, you can reach the centre quickly, and if you are coming from elsewhere in Spain the station also connects onward to Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Valencia and Alicante. Settle in, then take a first walk down the Paseo de la Castellana to get your bearings, with the Kio Towers and the Four Towers framing the skyline around Plaza de Castilla.
- Start at Chamartín station and orient yourself around the transport network
- Walk the Paseo de la Castellana towards Plaza de Castilla
- Note the Kio Towers and the Four Towers as landmarks
Day two: Give the day to the station district's headline sights. Visit the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, then take in an exhibition at the Fundación Canal. For longer trips, the high-speed operators AVE, Avlo, Ouigo and Iryo run from Chamartín, and Regional services reach Segovia and Salamanca, so you can plan a day out if you prefer. In the evening, use Cercanías to hop to Sol, Recoletos or Atocha, or change at Nuevos Ministerios, and see how the centre compares with the calmer streets around Chamartín.
- Santiago Bernabéu Stadium
- Fundación Canal
- Evening connections via Sol, Recoletos, Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios
Day three: Slow down and treat the district as a base rather than a stopover. Buy a ticket and ride the Metro or an EMT bus to fill any gaps in your plan, then return to Chamartín for a final wander around Plaza de Castilla and the Paseo de la Castellana. If your onward journey is by train, the range of operators and Regional lines from Chamartín makes leaving easy, whether you are heading back into Madrid or on to another part of Spain.
- Use Metro or EMT buses for any last connections
- Final walk around Plaza de Castilla and the Paseo de la Castellana
- Depart from Chamartín by Cercanías, AVE, Avlo, Ouigo, Iryo or Regional
