Girga

Introduction

Girga — also written Digirga, Digurga or Jirjā — sits on the west bank of the Nile in the Sohag Governorate of Upper Egypt. It is the metropolitan see of the Coptic Orthodox Church, and it holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously inhabited city on the African continent.

Three days in Girga

Day one: Start in Girga itself, the town also written Digirga, Digurga or Jirj, and get your bearings along the Nile, which shapes daily life throughout Sohag Governorate. Take your time wandering the streets of this Upper Egypt town before turning to its Coptic Orthodox Church, the community's principal monument and a natural first stop.

Day two: Give the day to the river. The Nile is the reason Girga exists, and its banks are where you can watch the pace of life in Upper Egypt unfold, from river traffic to the fields that line the water. Keep the afternoon slow and stay close to town.

Day three: Use your last day to fill in what you missed, returning to the Coptic Orthodox Church if you want a longer look or simply revisiting the parts of Girga that appealed to you most. It is a place that rewards unhurried time rather than a checklist, so leave room to sit by the Nile before you move on.
