Akhmim

Introduction

Akhmim sits on the east bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt, within the Sohag Governorate and just a short distance northeast of Sohag itself. The ancient Greeks knew the city as Khemmis or Chemmis, and also as Panopolis.

Three days in Akhmim

Day one: Start in Akhmim itself, the town in Sohag Governorate that the Greeks knew as Panopolis and that earlier texts call Khemmis or Chemmis. Walk the streets to get your bearings, then follow the Nile, which shapes the whole of Upper Egypt and gives you your first sense of the town's setting. Keep the day slow and let Akhmim set the pace.

Day two: Use Akhmim as your base and look deeper into its long history, holding in mind the layers of names it has carried — Khemmis, Chemmis, Panopolis. The Nile is never far away, and time spent along it balances the day. If you want a change of scene, Sohag is the other name in Sohag Governorate worth keeping in mind.

Day three: Spend your last day between Akhmim and the river, revisiting whatever drew you most on the first two days. Sohag Governorate and Upper Egypt are broad, so treat this as a gentle close rather than a rush to see everything. Leave with the town's several names — Akhmim, Khemmis, Chemmis, Panopolis — still turning over in your mind.
