Touggourt
Introduction
Touggourt is a city and commune in the Algerian Sahara, built beside an oasis and once the seat of a sultanate. It serves as the capital of Touggourt District in Touggourt Province, and its urban area stretches across the neighbouring communes of Nezla, Tebesbest and Zaouia El Abidia.
Before you go
Touggourt sits on the western edge of a wide chain of oases where palm plantations and other agriculture are worked along a stretch of land running some 50 km from north to south. The surrounding towns of the oasis system — Sidi Slimane and Megarine to the north, Tamacine and Balidat Ameur to the south — are part of the same cultivated belt, and the system continues further north into El Oued Province around Djamaa and El M'Ghair. Beyond the palms and fields, the land turns arid and barren, with broad sand dunes lying to both the west and east of the city.
Plan your trip around that contrast: the oasis core is where the agriculture and settlements are concentrated, while the desert and dunes begin just outside it. Because the city anchors the western side of the oasis chain, it works well as a base for reaching the neighbouring oasis towns in either direction.
Getting there
Touggourt sits at the junction of the N3 and N16 roads, making it straightforward to reach by car from several directions. The N3 runs north to Megarine, Sidi Slimane and Biskra, and south to Hassi Messaoud and Illizi, while the N16 heads east to Taibet and El Oued. To the northwest, the Route Messaad Tougourt links the city with Messaâd and Djelfa, and local roads connect to the nearby towns of Megarine and Tamacine. The city is also connected by railway to Biskra.
- By plane: Sidi Mahdi Airport (TGR) is served by Air Algérie, with flights from Algiers–Houari Boumédiène and Bou Saâda.
- By road: Use the N3 from Biskra in the north or Hassi Messaoud and Illizi in the south, the N16 from El Oued and Taibet in the east, or the Route Messaad Tougourt from Messaâd and Djelfa in the northwest.
Getting around
Touggourt is compact enough to walk in the centre, but the heat sets the rhythm: the streets are quiet through the hottest part of the day and fill with people after nightfall. Plan errands and outings for the cooler hours, and treat walking as something for early morning or evening rather than a way to cross the whole city. If you're heading to the outskirts, take a taxi rather than walking, and avoid unlit outskirts alone after dark.
Taxis are the most convenient way to get around town, and public transport exists but may be unfamiliar to newcomers. Settle the fare before you get in, or ask the driver to use the meter, and carry cash, since cards aren't accepted everywhere. Collective taxis shuttle between the oasis cities and are a good option for reaching El Oued, Ouargla or Hassi Messaoud. There's no metro or tram; the railway station is relevant mainly for long-distance travel, with links to Biskra and a night train from Algiers via Constantine and Biskra. Sidi Mahdi Airport handles domestic flights, and if you arrive via El Oued, Ouargla or Hassi Messaoud, buses and collective taxis continue overland on quality asphalt roads.
Where to stay
You will find accommodation in the town itself, which serves as the main base for exploring the surrounding oasis region.
Food & drink
The source material for Touggourt contains no information on where or what to eat and drink, so there is nothing to describe in this section. What to see and do
Start in the old ksar of Mestaoua, the historical heart of Touggourt, which predates the 15th century. Its alleyways are covered with palm trunks, and a few buildings cling to the old mosque. Within the ksar you'll find a market enclosed by a rampart that opens to the outside through three large gates: Bab es-Salem, Bab Lebled and Bab Lekdar.
Then visit the Grand Mosque of Touggourt, known as Djamaa El-Atik ("ancient mosque") or Djamaâ El-Kebir, founded by Sultan Ibrahim Ben-Djellab in 1805 and set in the old ksar. It has a large courtyard ringed by arcades, two small patios, a fountain, a large green dome and a square minaret. In the city centre, the tombs of the kings of Touggourt lie in the royal family cemetery, marked by whitewashed domes.
When to go
Touggourt has a hot desert climate, so the timing of your visit matters a great deal. Summers are long and extremely hot, with daytime highs that stay punishingly high for months and peak in July. Nights offer little relief, staying very hot and often even hotter in the hottest month. This is also the driest stretch of an already arid year, so expect fierce sun and plan your time outdoors around the heat rather than through the middle of the day.
Winters are short and warm rather than cold, making this the most comfortable stretch for visiting. Rain is scarce year-round, so wet days are few even in winter. Whenever you come, build your days around the heat and the sun.
Three days in Touggourt
Day one: Settle into Touggourt and get your bearings in the Algerian Sahara. Use the town as your base for the surrounding Touggourt District and Touggourt Province, and plan a gentle first day among the palm groves and old quarters. Nezla, Tebesbest and Zaouia El Abidia sit close by, so you can move between them without rushing. If you want a quiet focus for the afternoon, Sidi Slimane gives you a reason to slow down.
- Base yourself in Touggourt and explore Nezla, Tebesbest and Zaouia El Abidia
- Visit Sidi Slimane
Day two: Push out to the smaller settlements around the district. Megarine, Tamacine and Balidat Ameur are within reach, and Djamaa and El Ghair lie beyond if you have arranged transport. Because the desert heat shapes the day, plan your movement for the cooler hours and keep the middle of the day loose.
- Head to Megarine, Tamacine and Balidat Ameur
- Continue to Djamaa and El Ghair if transport allows
Day three: Use the morning for anything you missed, then think about the onward route. Taxis and the Route Messaad Tougourt connect the area toward Messaâd, while Biskra, El Oued and Hassi Messaoud are the larger reference points for longer journeys. If you are flying, Sidi Mahdi Airport (TGR) serves Touggourt, with Air Algérie links to Algiers and Houari Boumédiène; otherwise the road can take you toward Taibet, El Oued Province, Illizi, Djelfa or Bou Saâda.
- Arrange onward travel by taxi or along the Route Messaad Tougourt
- Check Sidi Mahdi Airport (TGR) for Air Algérie flights to Algiers
