Bab Ezzouar
Introduction
Bab Ezzouar is a suburb of Algiers in northern Algeria, and one of the city's fastest-growing municipalities. In recent years the area has seen many hotels and commercial malls built, giving it a modern, commercial character within the wider Algiers area.
The suburb is also home to the University of Science and Technology of Houari Boumediene (USTHB), one of Algeria's most prominent technological universities. Between its malls, hotels and university, Bab Ezzouar offers a different side of Algiers from the historic city centre.
Getting around
Bab Ezzouar is a suburb of Algiers rather than a city with a downtown, so orient yourself by neighbourhood name rather than by a central square. The commune is a patchwork of distinct cités and housing estates, among them Cité Ismail Yefsah and Cité Soummam in the centre and north-east, Cité du 8 Mai 1945 (Sorécal) north of the Algiers northern bypass road, Cité du 5 Juillet 1962 to the south, and the Boushaki and Douzi housing estates. Knowing which cité you are heading for is more useful than knowing a street address. The N11 highway from Algiers passes through the north of the commune and continues east to join the A1, so treat it as your reference line for north-side destinations; everywhere else is reached by smaller local roads that are easy to lose track of without the cité names.
The Algiers tramway serves Bab Ezzouar and runs to Bordj el Kiffan, with Yahia Boushaki the noted stop for getting around the commune — the most straightforward fixed-route option for local trips. Algiers' metro is a city-centre network rather than a Bab Ezzouar one, so use it once you have reached central Algiers. Buses are the workhorse for short local hops, while private coaches and inter-city trains handle longer journeys with reserved, air-conditioned seats. The rechargeable Edahabia card, sold at any Algiers tram or metro station, works with one tap on buses, trams and the metro. Taxis are widely available, but avoid unofficial touts outside bus stations, who are known to quote inflated rates and may take a detour; use a ride-hailing app such as Yassir or TemTem for metered fares and route tracking, or insist on the meter or agree the fare in advance. Shared taxis fill gaps in the network — faster than waiting for scheduled transport, but often crowded. Walking works well within a single cité, and the university area around USTHB draws foot traffic, but distances and the layout of local roads make walking between cités less practical. Plan your day around one cité at a time.
Three days in Bab Ezzouar
Day one: Start in Bab Ezzouar itself, the district within Algiers, Algeria, that gives this itinerary its base. Get your bearings on foot through the residential quarters, including Cité Ismail Yefsah and Cité Soummam, and note how the area sits between the university campus and the surrounding neighbourhoods. In the evening, keep things simple and eat near where you are staying.
Day two: Turn to the university side of the district. The University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene, known as USTHB, anchors this part of Bab Ezzouar, and the streets around it are busy with students during term. Use the day to walk the campus edges and the nearby cités, then return to the centre for the evening.
Day three: Look outward from Bab Ezzouar toward the wider Algiers area. Buses, Edahabia taxis, Yassir, TemTem and shared taxis are the usual ways to move around, so plan your route before you set out. If you have time left, walk the neighbourhood once more and see how the district connects to Bordj El Kiffan and the coast road.
