Muenster

Introduction

Münster is an independent city in the northern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and the historic capital of the Westphalia region. It also serves as the centre of a state district. During the Protestant Reformation, the city was the location of the Anabaptist rebellion, and it was one of the two sites — alongside Osnabrück — where the Treaties of Westphalia were signed in 1648, ending the Thirty Years' War.

Today, Münster is known as the bicycle capital of Germany, so expect to share the streets with plenty of cyclists as you explore.

Getting there

Muenster sits on US 82, roughly 10 miles west of Gainesville and 15 miles east of Nocona, so the highway is the straightforward way in from either direction. Approaching from the west, you'll pass through Nocona before reaching town; from the east, Gainesville is the nearest larger stop on the same route.

Getting around

Muenster is a name shared by several places, so confirm which one you are dealing with before you plan how to move around it. The source material covers Münster in Germany, Muenster in Saskatchewan, and Muenster in Texas, and each has its own setting and connections.

Where to stay

For lodging in Muenster, the A-Ok Motel on East Division Street is your option, reachable by phone to arrange your stay.

Food & drink

For a meal in Muenster, you have a couple of straightforward options along Division Street. Center Restaurant sits on East Division, while Kountry Korners is found on West Division, giving you a choice of local spots for a bite without straying far from the main road. When you're ready for a drink, head to Doc's Bar & Grill on North Main Street, where you can settle in for a casual evening out.

What to see and do

In Muenster you can visit the Muenster Museum on North Main Street. The town also has a clock tower with a glockenspiel, one of only a few in the United States; the German-style tower features animated wooden figurines that dance when the clock strikes. For a festival, plan around Germanfest, a celebration of German culture and beer held annually on the last full weekend of April.

Festivals & events

Münster's event calendar includes Germanfest, held in April. If your visit coincides with it, it is the city's main festival offering covered here.

Three days in Muenster

Day one: Start in Münster itself, in North Rhine-Westphalia, and take in the city's long history, from the Protestant Reformation and the Anabaptist episode to the Treaties of Osnabrück and Münster that ended the Thirty Years' War. Today the city is a lively place to wander, and you can spend your first day simply getting your bearings on foot.

Day two: Head for Muenster in the United States, in Texas, and use it as your base. Approaching from the surrounding countryside, you pass through Nocona and Gainesville before reaching town. Settle in, then eat along East Division Street at the Center Restaurant or Kountry Korners, or cross to West Division for the Ok Motel side of things.

Day three: Give the day to local flavour. Stop at Doc Bar and Grill on North Main Street, then visit the Muenster Museum to learn how German settlers shaped the town. If your timing fits, Germanfest is the highlight of the year, and it is the best way to see Muenster at its most sociable.
