Magangue

Introduction

Magangué is a city and municipality in the Department of Bolívar, Colombia, set on the Magdalena River just north of where the Cauca River flows into it. Its position on these waterways once made it home to the country's largest port, and that strategic location is still what defines the place.

As the second largest city in the department, Magangué has a working river character rather than a resort one. Come for the sense of a river town shaped by its traffic and geography, and expect a place whose potential is bound up with the water that runs through it.

Getting around

Magangué has no rail, metro or tram network, so you'll get around by road and, for longer journeys, by river and bus. Local buses run along two main corridors, Carrera 39 and Calle 16, which are easy to remember and are also the routes to use if you're heading to the bus terminal by public transport. The city is compact enough that its central grid, including those same corridors, works well on foot for short trips between nearby shops, lodgings and the riverside — but for anything involving luggage, the terminal or a longer cross-city trip, take a taxi or a bus instead.

Taxis are the most flexible way to reach Terminal de Magangue, at Calle 16 # 39-82, and you can take one there from anywhere in the city. No ride-hailing apps or specific taxi companies are documented for Magangué, so arrange taxis locally, ask at your accommodation, or flag one on the street rather than relying on an app you haven't confirmed works. For intercity travel, the terminal serves destinations within Bolívar Department and elsewhere in Colombia, with operators including Rápido Ochoa, Expreso Brasilia and Unitransco; buy tickets at the operator counters inside or online, and if you buy an e-ticket, exchange it at the counter for a boarding ticket before you travel. Premium Plus also serves Magangué on its shared intercity routes, accepts e-tickets without a printout, and runs a single Luxury class with toilets and Wi-Fi on board; its longer routes, such as those to and from Bogotá, depart in the afternoon and run overnight, so plan for a long ride.

Three days in Magangue

Day one: Arrive in Magangué, a river town in Bolívar Department, Colombia, where the Magdalena River and Cauca River meet. Settle in and get your bearings along the Carrera and Calle, the town's main streets, then take a local taxi to the Terminal if you need to confirm onward transport. As evening comes, eat where locals do and try the river fish that the town is known for.

Day two: Spend the morning on the water, since the meeting of the Magdalena and Cauca rivers defines the town. Come back for a slow afternoon and a look at the riverfront, then plan your next move: Rápido Ochoa, Expreso Brasilia and Unitransco all serve Magangué, and Premium Plus and Luxury are among the coach classes you can book for the road to Bogotá.

Day three: Take a final walk through the centre along the Carrera and Calle, and use the morning to sort out your ticket and schedule. Taxis make it easy to reach the Terminal for a departure toward Bogotá or elsewhere in Bolívar Department. If you have time before you leave, return to the river for one last look at the water.
