Guixi
Introduction
Guixi is a county-level city in Jiangxi Province, China, administered as part of the prefecture-level city of Yingtan. It sits in the eastern part of the province, with its southeastern edge meeting the border of Fujian Province.
Getting around
Guixi has no airport and no metro or tram network, so getting around relies on walking, buses, taxis and ride-hailing. The compact city centre, Xiongshi, on the Xin River, is the key fact: many locations within it are walkable, and safety is high enough that late-night walks are considered feasible. Outside the centre, you will want the bus or a taxi.
- Buses: An extensive bus network links residential areas with the administrative centre, the railway station and the major suburban zones, and reaches the main attractions. It is the most accessible and budget-friendly option for visitors. Fares are typically paid in cash or by QR code through local payment systems, so set up a mobile payment app before you arrive.
- Taxis and ride-hailing: Taxis and mobile ride-hailing are available, with Didi the app to use. These suit longer trips or neighbouring settlements, pricing is described as transparent, and ride-hailing is an easy way to get a taxi late at night.
- Rail: With no airport of its own, rail is the most popular way in and out. Guixi is a railroad junction for the Anhui–Jiangxi and Zhejiang–Jiangxi Railways and sits near Yingtan, a major railway hub. High-speed trains and intercity buses link the city with Nanchang in a few hours; other stations in the surrounding area include Shangrao, Sidu, Jingdezhen and Nanchang.
- Arriving by air: Fly into Nanchang or Jiujiang, then continue by high-speed train or intercity bus, with rail the most popular choice.
Currency is the Chinese Yuan, but cards are rarely accepted — set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and use ATMs in the city centre if you need cash. English is not widely spoken, so an offline translator is advisable. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit: mild, dry and good for hiking. Summers are hot and humid, winters cool, and June is the wettest month, so pack accordingly if you plan to walk or hike.
