Xuyong
Introduction
Xuyong is a county in the southeast of Sichuan Province, sitting where Sichuan meets both Guizhou to the south and Yunnan to the west. It falls under the administration of Luzhou, the prefecture-level city that governs it.
This is a corner of the province where three regions converge, so your sense of the place begins with its position on the map rather than with any single sight. The county spreads across a wide stretch of country, and the surrounding provinces shape its setting on two sides.
Getting around
Xuyong is a mountainous, rural county rather than a dense city, so think of it as one central town — Xuyong Town, the county seat — plus a web of villages and smaller towns linked by road. Base yourself in the county town and treat everywhere else as a day trip. Within Xuyong Town the centre is compact enough to cover on foot, with local buses, taxis or a booked car for anything further; there is no metro, tram or urban rail, so surface road transport is the whole story. Outside town, walking is not a practical way between places: the terrain is mountainous, villages are spread out and rivers cut through the area, so routes rarely run straight and even short-looking journeys take generous time.
- Buses are the backbone of public transport, and the rural network is built to connect villages with the county town and with each other. Each village has at least one flag stop, with vehicles departing regularly from fixed points.
- Service is organised by zone, based on road mileage, population and demand: high-demand routes run by shifts, low-demand ones by booking. Ask at your accommodation or the local stop which zone you are heading into and whether that route runs on a schedule or needs booking.
- Extra customized rural buses are put on at peak times such as holidays and agricultural return-home periods.
- For villages off the main routes, or at times when scheduled services don't run, taxis and car-based transport fill the gaps. Arrange cars through your accommodation or a reputable local operator rather than flagging down informal vehicles, and confirm the price before you set off.
- Fares are handled by the operating companies rather than a single citywide pass, so expect to pay per journey.
If you are flying in, you will arrive via a larger regional airport and continue overland by road; the mountainous terrain means allowing substantial time for that final leg. Confirm your arrival airport and onward road connection through your accommodation or a local operator before you travel, and ask specifically whether the final stretch needs to be booked in advance.
Three days in Xuyong
Day one: Start in Xuyong Town, the county seat of Xuyong in Sichuan Province. The town sits at the junction of Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan, so it makes a natural base for exploring the surrounding area. Within Xuyong Town you can get your bearings on foot and ask locally about transport for the days ahead.
Day two: Use Xuyong Town as your base for a day outside the town. Buses serve the surrounding area, so ask at the bus service about routes and confirm fares before you set off. Arrange your return trip in advance if you plan to be out late.
Day three: Spend a final day in Xuyong Town before moving on. Extra time lets you arrange onward travel toward Luzhou or into Guizhou and Yunnan. Confirm bus times and fares at the service desk, then plan your departure.
