Wuchuan
Introduction
Wuchuan is a county-level city in southwestern Guangdong province, and the easternmost county-level division of Zhanjiang prefecture. It covers roughly 848 square kilometres, so you can expect a compact, manageable place rather than a sprawling metropolis.
Beyond its administrative position within Zhanjiang, the source gives little on what to see or do, so treat Wuchuan as a stop to research further before you go rather than a destination with a ready-made itinerary.
Getting around
First, confirm which Wuchuan you're visiting: the name belongs to three separate county-level divisions in China — Wuchuan in Guangdong (under Zhanjiang), Wuchuan County in Inner Mongolia (under Hohhot), and Wuchuan Gelao and Miao Autonomous County in Guizhou (under Zunyi). They sit far apart and their transport networks differ completely, so settle this before you plan any local journeys. The notes below cover Wuchuan in Guangdong.
In Wuchuan (Guangdong), the core public transport is buses and taxis, licensed to the local operator Wuchuan Zhanqi 509 Automobile Transport Co., Ltd., based on Jiefang Road in the Meilu area. Urban buses run in the city, and scheduled inter-city, inter-county and intra-county coach services link Wuchuan with surrounding areas; some routes have been converted to chartered services, which you should book in advance through the operator. Otherwise buy tickets at the bus or coach station or on boarding, depending on the service. The operator has been penalised for issues such as boarding at non-designated stops and running off designated routes, so board only at official stops and keep your ticket. Cruising taxis are licensed, so you can flag one on the street or pick one up at transport hubs. Do not assume a metro or tram network exists — plan on buses, coaches and taxis, and check locally for any rail connections before relying on them. Central areas around Meilu are likely to be manageable on foot for short trips, but take a bus or taxi for longer journeys. Before you travel, confirm which airport you'll use and arrange onward transport in advance — a scheduled or chartered coach or a taxi, with the local operator's inter-city and chartered services the most likely option from a regional hub.
Three days in Wuchuan
Day one: Start in Wuchuan itself, in Guangdong, and get your bearings in the urban core around Meilu, where the streets are busiest and the everyday life of the city is easiest to read. Jiefang Road makes a natural first walk, with local transport connections such as Wuchuan Zhanqi Automobile Transport Co Ltd useful if you plan to move on later. Otherwise, keep the first day simple: cruise the central streets, eat where the locals eat, and adjust to the warm, humid air of coastal western Guangdong.
Day two: Use Wuchuan as your base for looking beyond the city into the wider Zhanjiang area. Before setting out, confirm your onward transport, since the county's road links are the practical way to reach the surrounding countryside and coast. Return to Meilu in the evening for a meal and an early night.
Day three: Spend your last day in the central urban area, revisiting the parts of Meilu and Jiefang Road you liked most and sorting out tickets for the next leg. If your travels take you further afield, note that China has other places named Wuchuan: Wuchuan County in Inner Mongolia, near Hohhot, and Wuchuan Gelao and Miao Autonomous County in Guizhou, near Zunyi. They are entirely separate destinations, so check your booking carefully before you leave.
