Shuizhai
Introduction
Shuizhai is a town in Wuhua County, within Meizhou City in Guangdong Province, southern China. It sits in the Cantonese-speaking south of the country, in a part of Meizhou that is inland and hilly rather than coastal.
Getting around
Shuizhai is a small township rather than a city with its own transport network, so getting around is really two problems: moving about locally, and connecting to the wider region. Within the town, walking is the most straightforward way to cover the centre and nearby streets, and distances are short. Do not expect a dense grid of pavements, English signage or pedestrian infrastructure on the scale of a major urban centre — carry water, wear comfortable shoes, and keep your hotel's address in Chinese characters with you. Taxis and private transfers are widely available and are the most convenient option with luggage or a specific destination, since they take you directly to your accommodation. Ride-hailing through Didi operates in the region and accepts international cards, a useful fallback if you don't want to negotiate fares or explain destinations in Chinese. Local and intercity buses are the budget option, with regular services linking regional centres to smaller settlements like Shuizhai.
There is no major railway station, metro or tram in Shuizhai, so treat rail as your long-distance leg and road transport as your final one: reach a larger nearby station — Meizhou or Shantou are the recommended rail gateways — then continue by bus, taxi or private transfer. The same applies to air travel, since the town has no airport; the nearest hubs are Meizhou, Shantou and Huizhou, all connected to Shuizhai by ground transport. From an airport, your realistic choices are an intercity bus toward Meizhou or the surrounding area, a taxi, or a pre-booked private transfer — the last being most convenient if you arrive with luggage or late in the day. Buses are air-conditioned, welcome in Guangdong's humid subtropical climate, and bus stations in the area are described as having clear navigation. Arrive at the station with time to spare and have your destination written in Chinese characters, since little English is spoken. Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate for payments, so set them up before you arrive or carry Chinese Yuan in cash as a backup, and avoid travelling during national holidays such as the October "Golden Week," when crowding makes transport harder to use.
Three days in Shuizhai
Day one: Arrive in Shuizhai, a town in Wuhua County within Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. It is a Cantonese-speaking area, so English is limited; have a translation app ready and set up Alipay or WeChat Pay, as mobile payment in Chinese Yuan is the norm. From your base in Shuizhai, use local taxis or ride-hailing apps like Didi to get around, and spend the afternoon getting your bearings in the town before an early dinner.
- Use Didi or local taxis for short trips around town.
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you need to pay for anything.
Day two: Base yourself in Meizhou and use it as a springboard for the surrounding county. Buses connect Shuizhai with larger hubs such as Meizhou, Shantou and Huizhou, so plan your day around these connections rather than trying to cover too much. Keep your itinerary flexible and confirm transport times locally, since English-language information is scarce.
Day three: Avoid travelling during October's Golden Week if you can, when domestic crowds swell and transport fills up. Otherwise, spend your final day consolidating your time in Wuhua County, using Meizhou City as your departure point for onward buses to Shantou or Huizhou. Allow extra time for connections and keep payments in Chinese Yuan handy for any cash-only situations.
