Shaoguan

Introduction

Located in northern Guangdong Province, Shaoguan serves as a gateway where the region meets the borders of Hunan and Jiangxi. You can explore this historic area of South China, which is home to the mummified remains of Huineng, the sixth Zen Buddhist patriarch.

Before you go

You will find that while many locals communicate in Cantonese and Mandarin, the primary language spoken throughout Shaoguan is Hakka. You may also encounter the Shaozhou Tuhua dialect, a unique form of speech that is mutually unintelligible with other major Chinese dialects. Additionally, members of the Yao ethnic minority speak their own distinct language.

Getting there

You can reach Shaoguan via several train routes from various cities across Guangdong and other parts of China, including destinations as far away as Beijing. Depending on your preference for speed or location, you can choose between two main stations: Shaoguan Station, which serves high-speed trains but is located far from the city center, and Shaoguan East Station, which serves slower trains and sits in a more central location closer to Danxiashan.

Alternatively, you can fly into Shaoguan Danxia Airport. From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, an intercity bus provides a convenient way to reach the city. Upon arriving by bus, you can navigate your way around the area using a map.

Getting around

You can navigate the city using the main bus terminal, which is located right next to the train station. From this hub, buses depart for various major sights and local destinations. If you prefer to explore on foot, the town center remains within walking distance; simply cross the river opposite the train station to reach the heart of the area.

For assistance with your itinerary, tourist guides are occasionally available to offer their services to travelers who have just arrived.

Where to stay

You can choose from a variety of accommodations depending on your preferred location and style of stay. Options range from local guesthouses to hotels situated near key transportation hubs.

Food & drink

You can find a variety of dining options along Heping Road, located at the northern end of the main shopping and pedestrian area. This stretch offers a mix of international chains and various Chinese cuisines to suit your palate.

If you are looking for a quick bite near the high-speed rail station, head toward the roadside tables at Kuàicān Miànshí. Located just past the station exit, this modest noodle shop provides a convenient spot for a bowl of soup and features a small convenience store situated right next door.

What to see and do

Explore the spiritual and natural landscapes of the region, starting with a visit to Nanhua Temple in the Qujiang District. As the former temple of Huineng, the sixth patriarch of Zen Buddhism, this site serves as an important pilgrimage destination where you can see his mummified remains. For those seeking dramatic scenery, travel to Renhua County to witness the canyon-like valleys and striking red and brown mountains of Danxiashan. You can also explore the vast wilderness of Nanling National Forest Park in Ruyuan Yao Nationality Autonomous County, which features a large oasis of preserved virgin forest, various waterfall groups, and the high peak of Shikengkong.

Depending on your interest in geology or local history, you can visit the Guangdong Grand Canyon in Dabu Town to see quartz sandstone formations and a narrow waterfall. Alternatively, head to the Wujiang District to explore the Shaoguan Museum to learn about the local heritage.

When to go

You can experience a variety of climates throughout the year in Shaoguan, ranging from mild, damp winters to hot, humid summers. If you visit during the winter months, you will find the season is short and begins with dry, sunny conditions before becoming progressively cloudier and damper as it advances. While the weather remains relatively mild, be aware that freezing rain can occur in nearby mountain passes.

The spring and early summer months bring the most rainfall to the region, making this the cloudiest and wettest time of year with less frequent sunshine. As you move into the summer, the weather becomes long and humid, though the heavy rains diminish as the season progresses. For a drier experience, autumn offers a relatively sunny season with improving conditions and lower humidity compared to the summer months.
