Zhaoyuan

Introduction

Zhaoyuan is a county-level city within Yantai in Shandong Province, sitting on the coast of the Bohai Sea. Its name is tied above all to gold: the area is known for its abundant deposits and production, and it is sometimes nicknamed "China's gold capital."

That reputation is the main thing the source offers a visitor, so come expecting a coastal Shandong setting whose identity is bound up with the gold industry rather than a resort town.

Getting around

Zhaoyuan has no metro or tram network, so plan your movements around buses. Zhaoyuan Bus runs the local network, with numbered routes linking residential districts, industrial areas, schools and leisure destinations. Route 9 is a circular line that starts and ends at the Bus Station, running daily including weekends from early morning until early evening with departures every few minutes, so waits are short. Other routes include Route 7 (Guoda Company – Machinery Factory), Route 6 (Houjia – Public Security Driving School), Route 5 (Tire Industrial Park – Huangtuya) and Route 2 (Jiaqishan Amusement Park – Weidong Middle School). Fares are not listed on route information, so check the Zhaoyuan Bus official site or a transit app; in practice you buy your ticket on board, so keep small change or a mobile payment method ready. Service can change around National Day and National Day Golden Week, so check locally if you travel then.

Because buses stop in the early evening, taxis and ride-hailing are the practical fallback for nights out, for luggage, or for trips the buses do not cover directly. Walking works well for short trips in the town centre and around the Bus Station, where several routes converge; for longer cross-city journeys or outlying stops on the circular Route 9, take the bus instead. Above all, double-check that your tickets and searches point to Zhaoyuan in Shandong, not Zhaoyuan County in Heilongjiang.

Three days in Zhaoyuan

Day one: Start in Zhaoyuan itself, getting your bearings on foot before the day heats up. The town sits in Shandong Province, and its streets give you a feel for the place before you head out. In the afternoon, take a local bus from Zhaoyuan Bus Station to Houjia, a rural spot where you can see how the surrounding countryside looks. Fares are low, and the service runs regularly. If you are travelling during National Day Golden Week, expect buses to be busier than usual, so plan your return earlier in the day.

Day two: Head out towards Huangtuya, a village in the countryside around Zhaoyuan. The route takes you past working land and small settlements, and the pace is slow and unhurried. In the afternoon, return to town and visit Jiaqishan Amusement Park, a good option if you are travelling with children or want a change from walking. Because the park is a local draw, weekends and National Day can be crowded, so go early if you want quieter hours.

Day three: Use your last day to see the working side of Zhaoyuan. The town's industry is part of its character, and a drive past the Tire Industrial Park and the Guoda Company Machinery Factory shows you what keeps the local economy moving. Finish with a walk through the streets near Weidong Middle School, where everyday life plays out. If you are heading onward to Yantai or towards the Bohai Sea, Zhaoyuan Bus Station is your starting point, and services run through the day.
