Pengpu
Introduction
Bengbu sits in northern Anhui Province, and its name means "Clam Wharf" — a nod to its former reputation as a freshwater pearl fishery. The city's built-up area spreads across four urban districts and reaches into Fengyang County in neighbouring Chuzhou Prefecture, which has largely become conurbated with the city.
Approach Bengbu as a place to understand a working stretch of northern Anhui rather than a polished tourist destination: the pearl-fishing past behind the name is the city's most distinctive claim on your attention.
When to go
Pengpu has a four-season humid subtropical climate with strong monsoon influences, so what you pack depends heavily on when you arrive. Winters are cool and sometimes cold, with January the coldest stretch of the year — expect chilly conditions and dress for them. Summers are hot and humid, and the heat can feel muggy; the majority of the year's rain falls from June to August, so rain is a frequent companion during those months.
If you want the brightest skies, aim for August, the sunniest month — though it stays hot and humid and the monsoon rains are still in play. March is the opposite: the cloudiest month, with the lowest possible sunshine of the year, so expect a mix of mild spring weather and plenty of overcast skies.
Three days in Pengpu
Day one: Approach Bengbu, the main city of the Pengpu area in Anhui Province, and use it as your base for exploring the wider region. Spend your first hours getting oriented in the city itself before heading out to Clam Wharf, a waterfront spot that gives you a feel for the local riverine character.
Day two: Head into Fengyang County, part of Chuzhou Prefecture, to see a more rural side of the region. The countryside here rewards a slow pace, so allow time to wander rather than rushing between stops.
Day three: Return to Pengpu and fill your last day with the places you most enjoyed earlier. Winters here are bitterly cold, with January the hardest month, while summers from June through August are hot and humid; March brings a milder interval between the two. If your timing is flexible, plan your visit around the season that suits you best.
