Jizhou

Introduction

Jizhou is a district of Hengshui in Hebei Province, northern China. It was formerly known as Ji County, and it carries a name with deep historical resonance: the old province of Jizhou, or Ji Province, once covered parts of what are now Hebei, Henan, and Shandong.

If you come here, come for that sense of layered history rather than for a packed itinerary. The district's identity is bound up with a provincial name that long predates the modern map, and understanding that connection is the key to appreciating what you see.

Getting around

Jizhou has no airport or high-speed rail hub of its own, so you will almost certainly arrive through Hengshui and continue from there. High-speed services stop at Hengshui East, while conventional trains use Hengshui Railway Station; high-speed connections run from Beijing South and Shijiazhuang, making the trip doable in a single morning or afternoon. Book through China Railway (12306) or the official apps and book in advance, since this is the one part of transport planning where leaving it late can genuinely cost you. From either Hengshui station, reach Jizhou by local bus, taxi, or ride-hailing. Local city buses are the workhorse of everyday movement: very cheap, covering most areas, and linking Jizhou with Hengshui and nearby Anping. For longer journeys into the region, long-distance coaches serve Hengshui and Jizhou from nearby provincial cities, with the main terminal at Hengshui Long-Distance Bus/Coach Station; coaches are a reasonable fallback when rail times do not suit you. DiDi is the recommended way to get a reliable taxi, which matters in a place where hailing a street cab and explaining your destination can be awkward. Private transfers suit airport runs and long trips but are expensive relative to local transport. Walking is practical in the old county centre and around the markets; outside that core, distances open up. Bicycle rental is a good fit for the village lanes and country roads surrounding the town, and the most pleasant way to explore the rural edges at your own pace.

Three days in Jizhou

Day one: Base yourself in Jizhou, in Hebei Province, and use it as your starting point for the surrounding area. Jizhou is also known as Ji County, and its older name, Ji Province, reflects a long history in this part of China. Spend your first day on foot, getting a feel for the town and its streets, then plan the rest of your trip around the transport links you will need.

Day two: Head to Hengshui, the main city in this part of Hebei. If you are coming from Beijing, the fastest option is the high-speed train from Beijing South to Hengshui East. You can also reach Hengshui Railway Station on slower services, and there are connections via Shijiazhuang. Book your ticket through China Railway. From Hengshui, local buses run to Anping, and for longer journeys you can use the Hengshui Long Distance Bus Coach Station. Within the city, DiDi and private cars are useful, while walking and bicycle are good for shorter trips.

Day three: Use Hengshui as your hub for the wider region. The surrounding provinces of Henan and Shandong are within reach if you want to extend your route, and Hebei itself has plenty to fill a final day. Check your onward connections before you set out, and allow time to return to Jizhou or to continue on from Hengshui.
