Didao
Getting around
Didao is a working coal-mining district, not a conventional tourist city, so treat local transport as something to arrange on the ground rather than plan in detail. Walking is the most dependable way to cover short distances within a settlement or around a single site, including the area around the Didao coal washery, though it is less practical for long distances between mine sections or into Jixi. Local buses are the usual form of public transport in a Chinese district of this kind: buy your ticket on board or with a local transit card, and ask at your accommodation which routes serve your destination, since published information for smaller districts is often incomplete or out of date. Dress for the season, as eastern Heilongjiang brings harsh winters and seasonal extremes.
- Taxis and ride-hailing: Taxis are the simplest and most flexible option, particularly for reaching the coal washery or outlying mine sections where scheduled service is thin. Ride-hailing apps work in many Chinese cities but coverage in smaller districts can be patchy, so keep a taxi as your fallback and agree on the fare or confirm the meter before setting off.
- Mine railways: These are industrial lines, not passenger services and not a public metro or tram network, so they are not a practical way to move between towns or into Jixi. Traffic is irregular, timetable information is unreliable, and multi-hour delays and cancellations are common, so do not build a tight itinerary around any specific movement. If you want to watch them, the Didao coal washery is where the system's two sections meet and is noted as photogenic in the late afternoon during the long days of the year and in the morning during winter; plan to wait and be prepared for cancellations.
- Arriving from the airport: You would arrive via the airport serving Jixi, which lies to the southeast of Didao, and continue onward by road. Transfer details are not documented, so confirm current options with your accommodation or a local operator before you travel and allow generous time given the irregularity of local transport.
Three days in Didao
Day one: Start in Didao on foot, since walking is the best way to get your bearings in this Heilongjiang mining town. Dress for the cold, as winters here are bitterly cold. If you are arriving by taxi, expect traffic and allow extra time for the ride.
- Walk the streets of Didao and get a feel for the local character.
- Ride a taxi to see the mine that shaped the town.
- Eat local Chinese food for dinner.
Day two: Transfer to Jixi for a change of scene, using taxis to get around. Dress warmly again, as the weather stays cold. If traffic is heavy, plan your ride carefully.
- Take a taxi from Didao to Jixi.
- Walk around Jixi and see the local streets.
- Return to Didao for a local Chinese meal.
Day three: Spend your last day on foot in Didao, revisiting the mine and the streets you liked. Dress for the cold one more time. If you are leaving, arrange a taxi early to avoid traffic.
- Walk to the mine for a final look.
- Ride a taxi back through town.
- Transfer onward from Didao when you are ready.
