Tonghua
Introduction
Located in the southern part of Jilin province, Tonghua serves as a significant hub within the region. You will find yourself in a location that shares borders with several neighboring areas, including Liaoning province to the west and the Chagang Province of North Korea to the south.
The city is recognized for its industrial significance as one of the five medicine production centres in China. Your visit to this prefecture-level city offers an exploration of a region defined by its historical role in pharmaceutical production.
Getting there
You can reach the city by air via Tonghua Sanyuanpu Airport, a regional hub that hosts direct flights from major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Qingdao.
Alternatively, you can arrive by train at Tonghua Railway Station. This first-class station sits at the intersection of the Shenyang-Jilin Railway and the Meizhou-Jilin Railway, offering multiple daily connections to destinations such as Changchun, Shenyang, Beijing, Dalian, and Ji'an. For those traveling by road, a long-distance bus station is located just a short walk from the train station, providing connections to cities like Siping, Jilin City, and Baihe.

What to see and do
You can explore a city that has been modernized with tall buildings and simple shopping malls. While the downtown area offers a pleasant atmosphere, your primary activities will likely involve strolling along the attractively redesigned riverfront or taking walks through the surrounding countryside and hills.
Because there are few tourist attractions within the city limits, you can use Tonghua as a jumping-off point to visit Koguryo sites in Ji'an or continue your travels toward Changbaishan.
When to go
You can experience a wide range of conditions in Tonghua depending on the time of year. The winters are long, dry, and very cold with windy conditions. As you move into spring and early summer, you will notice a brief transition period where temperatures rise toward summer warmth and rainfall begins to increase.
Summer brings hot and humid weather influenced by monsoon conditions and mountainous topography, which results in the majority of the year's precipitation falling during these months. You can also visit during the brief autumn season as the air cools and rainfall diminishes before the onset of winter.
