Getting around

First, confirm which Yunlong you are heading to: the two most likely destinations are Yunlong District in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, and Yunlong County in Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province. The guidance below covers Yunlong District in Xuzhou, the central district built around Yunlong Lake and Yunlong Mountain, which works well as a base for exploring the wider Xuzhou area. Within the district, getting around is straightforward and low-stress: it is compact around its two main natural features, and the mix of metro, buses, taxis, ride-hailing and shared bikes means you rarely need to plan far ahead. Fares are inexpensive and mobile payment is widely accepted.

On the metro, pay at the gate; on buses you can use small change, a local transit card or mobile payment, and keeping a little cash in small notes is still useful as a backup. For taxis and ride-hailing, WeChat Pay and Alipay are the simplest approach. If you arrive by air at Xuzhou Guanyin Airport (XUZ), an airport shuttle runs to central Xuzhou and Xuzhou East Railway Station and connects conveniently with the high-speed rail station if you are continuing onward, while a taxi or Didi is the simpler choice if you are heading straight to a hotel in Yunlong. Xuzhou has two main railway stations — Xuzhou East (Xuzhoudong) for high-speed services and Xuzhou Railway Station for conventional trains — and long-distance coaches depart from city-centre terminals and from terminals near Xuzhou East; if you arrive by coach, a taxi or the metro will usually be the easiest way to finish the trip into Yunlong.

If you are heading to Yunlong County in Yunnan instead, the picture is regional rather than urban. Yunnan's traveller routes are built around Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La, connected by a high-speed rail spine from Kunming South to Dali and on to Lijiang, with onward road travel to Shangri-La. Foreign visitors typically book these trains through Trip.com, which handles the Chinese rail real-name requirement so that your passport name and number match the ticket; booking several days ahead is wise in peak season, and seats are assigned with no open seating. High-speed rail stations are usually several kilometres from the old towns they serve, so plan a taxi, ride-hail or shuttle for the final leg. In Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La there is no metro; DiDi and walking cover most needs, and the old towns themselves are largely pedestrian zones. Kunming is the exception, with the only metro in Yunnan, including a line linking the airport to the city centre and connections onward to Kunming South for high-speed trains; fares there are paid by QR code through Alipay or WeChat Pay at the turnstile, and stations have bilingual signage and announcements.

Three days in Yunlong

Day one: Base yourself in Yunlong District in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, and start with Yunlong Lake, the green heart of the city. Walk the shoreline paths and continue into Yunlong Park, then climb Yunlong Mountain for views over the water and the surrounding streets. Signage is extensive and in Chinese, so keep a translation app handy. For getting around, the Xuzhou Metro is the simplest option; taxis are easy to flag, and WeChat Pay or Alipay covers almost everything. Bikes are available if you prefer to ride between the lake and the park.

Day two: Stay in Xuzhou and use the metro or a taxi to move between the city's sights at an easy pace. If you are arriving or leaving by air, Xuzhou Guanyin Airport (XUZ) is the city's airport; by rail, Xuzhou East Railway Station (Xuzhoudong) handles high-speed trains, while Xuzhou Railway Station serves the older lines. Didi works well for door-to-door trips. Practical walking routes link the central sights, so build in time to wander rather than rush.

Day three: If you want a complete change of scene, travel to Yunlong County in Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province. The usual approach is by air or rail to Kunming, then onward by road into Dali Prefecture. Fares and schedules vary, so check ahead. This is a slower, mountain-and-valley side of the name Yunlong, far from the Xuzhou lakeside, and it rewards a flexible plan.
