Tongling

Introduction

Tongling is a prefecture-level city in southern Anhui province, China, set on the Yangtze River. As a river port, it sits along one of the country's great waterways, with Wuhu to its east, Chizhou to the southwest and Anqing to the west.

Before you go

Tongling is one of the oldest cities in Anhui Province, with records of human activity and copper mining reaching back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. It was one of China's earliest copper production areas and an early centre of bronze culture, and that heritage still shapes the place: the ancient Tongguanshan Mine and bronze relics are among the sites that show the skill of early Chinese metallurgy. The copper industry thrived through the Tang and Song dynasties, supplying material for bronze artifacts, coins and statues, and after 1949 the city developed into a modern copper industrial base. Expect a destination where industrial heritage and cultural significance are bound up with copper.

The climate is temperate, with generally clear skies and a mild, comfortable feel overall. Summers are hot and winters cold, while spring and autumn are moderate with a noticeable temperature difference and a fairly stable transition between the seasons. Rain is spread through the year but falls mainly in summer, with winter drier. Winds come from the southwest in summer and the northwest in winter, under the influence of the North Pacific and Siberian air masses. Pack for the season you are travelling in rather than for a single year-round mildness.

Getting there

Tongling has no airport of its own, so most travellers arrive by rail or road. The city is a railway hub in Anhui Province, and its two stations serve different kinds of journeys. Tongling North Railway Station is a key stop on the Beijing–Fuzhou High-Speed Railway, with fast, comfortable services linking Beijing, Hefei and Fuzhou. Tongling Railway Station handles conventional trains and is the economical choice for reaching Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan.

If you are flying in, the nearest airports are Chizhou Jiuhuashan Airport and Hefei Xinqiao International Airport; you can reach either by road or high-speed rail to connect with domestic and international flights. Long-distance buses arrive at Tongling Bus Station in the city centre of Tongguan District, with services to cities inside and outside the province, including Hefei, Wuhu and Chizhou. The station has ticketing, waiting and luggage facilities, and nearby bus routes and taxis make it easy to continue into the city.

Getting around

Within Tongling, city buses reach most areas and are an economical choice for daily travel. Taxis are readily available throughout the city, and ride-hailing platforms such as Didi and Meituan are widely used, giving you a convenient point-to-point option — particularly useful if you don't speak Chinese or prefer a fixed price before setting off. For short hops, shared bicycles and electric scooters can be found across the city and are an eco-friendly way to cover short distances. Walking combined with buses, shared bikes, or e-scooters covers most everyday needs.

Self-driving is another flexible option, as the city's road infrastructure is well maintained and parking lots are available in urban areas and near major attractions. A car also opens up nearby scenic destinations such as Jiuhua Mountain and Tianzhu Mountain, which suits family or group travel. For travel beyond the city, Tongling Bus Station in the city center of Tongguan District is the main long-distance terminal, with services to cities such as Hefei, Wuhu, and Chizhou, and it is easily reached by nearby bus routes and taxi connections.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Tongling centres on full-service hotels rather than hostels or guesthouses. The Tongling Grand Hotel offers several restaurants serving both local and international cuisine, and its location gives you easy access to transport around the city. The Tongling Wanda Realm Hotel pairs modern facilities and a fitness centre with a setting near shopping and entertainment venues, which suits families and business travellers alike. The Tongling Yuehua Grand Hotel is another family-friendly choice, with spacious rooms and high-quality service, and transport connections that make getting around straightforward.

Because the options here are limited to these large hotels, it is worth booking ahead if you are travelling at busy times, and choosing your hotel based on whether you would rather be near shopping and entertainment or near the main transport links.

Food & drink

For casual eating, head to Tongling Snack Street, where you can graze on local snacks such as stir-fried daylily, Tongling sausages, and dried vegetables. The East Gate Night Market offers a similar spread of local snacks in a livelier evening setting, popular with locals and visitors alike. If you would rather sit down to a full meal, try Tongling Old Street Restaurant for traditional home-style dishes served in a nostalgic atmosphere, or Tongling Flavor Restaurant for Tongling specialties including rice claypot rice and stir-fried daylily. Tongling Flavor Mountain Villa serves traditional Tongling dishes in a mountain villa setting that suits family gatherings. To drink, seek out Tongling Clear Fragrance Liquor, a local spirit known for its refreshing taste and fragrant aroma. You can taste and buy it at the Tongling Clear Fragrance Liquor Specialty Store, or learn about the region's alcoholic heritage at the Tongling Liquor Culture Museum, which also serves the liquor. In summer, look for the Tongling Sour Plum Soup Shop, which specializes in traditional sour plum soup made with fresh plums and herbal ingredients for a sweet-and-sour drink.

What to see and do

Tongling's sights split between its lakes, mountains and its deep copper heritage. At Tianjing Lake Scenic Area you can stroll walking trails past pavilions and greenery beside clear water, while Phoenix Mountain Scenic Area offers dense forest, fresh air, hiking trails and viewing platforms. Copper Culture Park is the city's signature stop, with copper sculptures, a museum on Tongling's history and the "Bronze Giant," the world's largest pure copper statue. For history in older stone, head to Datong Ancient Town, which preserves Ming and Qing dynasty architectural styles along Datong Ancient Street, with dock ruins and an old theater stage. Nature lovers can watch birds and fish at Baidang Lake Ecological Wetland, climb Tianmen Mountain for its peculiar peaks, ancient temples and caves, or escape the summer heat among the streams and dense forest of Jiulangjian Forest Park. The Martyrs Memorial Hall rounds things out with artifacts and photos tracing the city's revolutionary history. Families have plenty to fill a day: Tongling Happy World is a comprehensive theme park with rides and entertainment for children, Tongling Zoo displays animals across multiple exhibition areas with interactive activities, and Tongling Water Park offers water slides and a drifting river to cool off in summer. Tongling Forest Park is the spot for hiking, picnicking and camping amid lush vegetation. Time your visit for autumn and you may catch the Tongling Copper Culture Festival, when copper art and production exhibitions, traditional techniques and modern works, and a copper handicrafts market take over the city.

When to go

Tongling has a temperate climate, and the seasons shape what you can expect from a visit. Spring and autumn are the steadiest stretches of the year: temperatures are moderate and the transitions are stable, though you should be ready for noticeable differences between one day and the next. Rainfall is fairly uniform across both seasons, so you can expect some rain without a pronounced wet or dry period.

Three days in Tongling

Day one: Arrive in Tongling, a city in Anhui Province on the Yangtze River, and settle into Tongguan District, the central neighbourhood where you can get your bearings. If you come by rail, Tongling North Railway Station and Tongling Railway Station connect you to Beijing, Hefei, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan, with the Beijing–Fuzhou High Speed Railway passing through. By air, Chizhou Jiuhuashan Airport and Hefei Xinqiao International Airport are the nearest options, and Tongling Bus Station links the city to As well as Wuhu, Chizhou and Anqing. Spend the rest of the day walking the district and eating local Chinese food.

Day two: Head to the Tongguanshan Mine, the site that gives Tongling its name and its industrial story. The mine's history reaches back through the Tang and Song dynasties, so take your time over the old workings and the layers of the city's past. Expect warm and humid summers, with rain carried in on winds from the North Pacific and cold spells driven by Siberian winds in winter, so pack accordingly.

Day three: Use your last day to follow the Yangtze River, the waterway that has shaped Tongling and its neighbours along the Anhui stretch. The river also gives you an easy onward route: Wuhu, Chizhou and Anqing are all within reach, and the rail links from Tongling put Hefei, Nanjing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Beijing and Fuzhou within a day's travel. If you have time before leaving, return to Tongguan District for a final meal.
