Man

Introduction

Man is a city in western Ivory Coast, serving as the seat of both Montagnes District and Tonkpi Region. It is also a commune and the seat of a sub-prefecture within Man Department.

Getting around

Within Man you can expect the same mix of transport found in other Ivorian regional cities: taxis, collective taxis known as woro-woro, bush taxis, and possibly moto-taxis, with buses serving the wider network. Taxis are metered in principle but negotiated in practice, so agree the fare before you set off; expect a locally determined colour scheme rather than the orange of Abidjan or the striped cars of Yamoussoukro. Woro-woro are shared vehicles that depart only when full, with each passenger paying for a seat to the same destination, and bush taxis likewise leave only when full, which makes their schedules uncertain — build in extra time if you rely on them. Moto-taxis, where they operate, can be the quickest way to cover short distances, but settle the price beforehand as you would with any taxi.

Walking is a normal part of daily life, and short trips on foot are entirely practical; for longer journeys, use the shared and negotiated modes above, and treat walking as best suited to shorter, familiar stretches rather than crossing the whole city. There is no metro or tram in Man, nor anywhere in Ivory Coast, and the national SITARAIL line linking Abidjan to Ouagadougou is an intercity service rather than a way to move around town. If you are arriving by air, Man is not an international gateway: you will most likely land at Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan and continue by daily intercity bus, by rail, or by a domestic Air Côte d'Ivoire flight where one is available.

Three days in Man

Day one: Start by getting your bearings in Man itself, in the Tonkpi Region of Montagnes District, Ivory Coast. Walking is a good way to settle into the town, and taxis are on hand if you want to cover more ground. As you move around Man Department, take in the character of the different quarters within Man rather than rushing between them.

Day two: Give the day over to the countryside around Man, including Woro, and arrange your transport in advance. Moto is one way to reach places beyond the town. Keep the pace relaxed and let the landscape of Montagnes District set the rhythm of the day.

Day three: Plan your onward travel. SITARAIL links Man with Abidjan and Ouagadougou, while Air Côte Ivoire serves connections through Félix Houphouët Boigny International Airport; Yamoussoukro is another option if you are heading across the country. If you are returning to Abidjan, allow time to sort tickets before you leave.
