Bunia

Introduction

Bunia is the capital of Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Before Ituri became a province in its own right, the city belonged to Orientale Province, which was later dissolved.

When to go

Bunia is warm, humid and wet all year round, so there is no truly dry season to plan around. The closest thing to a let-up comes from December to February, when rainfall drops noticeably and conditions are at their most comfortable for travel. Even then it stays wet, with frequent showers, damp air and muddy ground underfoot, so pack accordingly and expect the weather to shape your days.

For the rest of the year the rains are very heavy and persistent, with warm, humid conditions throughout. Downpours are frequent, the ground stays saturated and moving around becomes difficult, so this is the wet season that dominates the calendar. If you want the least rain, aim for the December to February window; otherwise, plan for constant wet weather and build flexibility into your itinerary.

Three days in Bunia

Day one: Start in Bunia, the town at the heart of Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Take your time getting oriented before you plan anything further afield. If you have come from Orientale Province, the change of scene will be clear, and the town itself is the natural base for your stay.

Day two: Build your day around the weather rather than against it. The drier stretch from December to February is the easier time to be out and about. Even then, conditions can shift, so keep your plans flexible. Downpours are part of life here, and they can arrive with little warning.

Day three: Use your last day to slow down and let the place set the pace. For a quieter experience, time your outings around the wetter spells rather than fighting them. If you have travelled this far, the reward is in paying attention to Bunia and Ituri Province on their own terms.
