Bukavu
Introduction
You will find Bukavu situated in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Located at the extreme south-western edge of Lake Kivu, the city serves as the capital of the South Kivu Province.
The geography of the area places you west of Cyangugu in Rwanda, with the two locations separated by the outlet of the Ruzizi River.
Before you go
Prepare for your visit by understanding the local context and cultural nuances to ensure a smooth experience. Familiarizing yourself with the regional atmosphere will help you navigate the area with confidence.
Getting there
You can reach Bukavu from Rwanda via the Cangungu border or from Burundi through the Uvira border. If traveling from Goma, you have the option of traveling by road or crossing Lake Kivu by boat. Be prepared for significant delays and potential bribes at the Rwanda/DRC border due to ongoing conflict and heavy cargo traffic; ensure you possess your visa beforehand rather than attempting to purchase one at the border.
When traveling by water from Goma, boats depart daily across the lake, where the waters are generally calm due to the narrow passage and numerous islands. While some boats may stop at Idjwi Island, you should inquire at the port regarding the various wooden boat departures throughout the day. Additionally, direct flights are available a few times a week from Kinshasa via national carriers and private companies.
Getting around
Navigating the city can be challenging due to the poor condition of many roads. You will find that most routes are in disrepair, with the exception of certain areas within the city center, such as the stretch from Labotte to the Ruzizi 1 border crossing in Nguba, which serves as a main artery known as boulevard Lumumba.
You can choose from various modes of transport to reach your destination:
- Taxis and mini-buses provide local transit through neighborhoods like Kadutu.
- Boda Bodas (motorcycles) navigate different routes, including the path between Kadutu and Panzi or toward the Ruzizi 1 border.
- Regular mini-buses offer travel to other major towns in the province, such as Kamituga and Uvira.
Where to stay
You can choose from several accommodations depending on your preferences for comfort and location. For a high-end experience, the Orchids Safari Club is regarded as the best hotel in town. Other nearby options include Hotel Residence, Hotel Riviera, and Hotel Panorama.
If you prefer a more modest stay, Hotel Tanganyika is located near the center of town. While it may appear somewhat unkempt, locals consider it a safe option that serves affordable food such as brochette and chips.
Food & drink
Savor the local flavors by visiting various establishments that offer distinct atmospheres. You can enjoy a meal with views of the lake at Hotel Orchid, which is noted for having high-quality food, or find a scenic spot at Hotel La Roche. For a different experience, visit Cafe and Restaurant Asante located between the Mayor Building and SONAS for your lunch or dinner. If you prefer local roasts such as fish or meat, Mama Kindja serves these dishes accompanied by chips.
Explore a variety of beverages to complement your meals. You can choose from popular beers like Primus, Mitzigi, and Turbo King, or opt for soft drinks including Vitalo, Fanta, and Coca-Cola. For a taste of the local culture, try traditional banana beer known as Kasiksi or Mutchibwe.
What to see and do
Explore the architectural heritage of the city by admiring the numerous Art Deco buildings scattered throughout the landscape. You can also visit the Our Lady of Peace Cathedral or experience the bustling atmosphere of the crowded Kadutu Market.
Beyond the city limits, you can travel to a picturesque peninsula on Lake Kivu or visit Idjwi Island and Minova village. Nature lovers can head to Kahuzi Biega National Park to see lowland gorillas. For a unique culinary experience, you can travel a difficult road to find nuns near the airport who serve cheese and ice cream.
