Burlington
Introduction
Burlington sits at the western end of Lake Ontario in Halton Region, Ontario. It borders Hamilton to the south, Milton to the northwest, and Oakville to the northeast, placing it within the Greater Toronto Area, the Hamilton census metropolitan area, and the Golden Horseshoe urban region.
Founded in 1874 and granted city status a century later, Burlington is a lakeside community whose position along the western shore of Lake Ontario puts it within easy reach of several of southern Ontario's larger urban centres.
Three days in Burlington
Day one: Start in Burlington itself, getting your bearings in a city founded beside Lake Ontario. Wander the downtown core and the waterfront, then use the rest of the day to understand where you are: Burlington sits in Halton Region, within Ontario, and forms part of both the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe.
Day two: Look outward across the region. Burlington's position between Lake Ontario and the surrounding communities makes it easy to reach Hamilton to the south-west, Milton to the north and Oakville to the east, so pick one of these neighbours and spend the day exploring it before returning to Burlington in the evening.
Day three: Give the lake and the wider setting a final pass. Return to the waterfront for a slower morning, then trace how Burlington connects to the rest of the Golden Horseshoe and the Greater Toronto Area. If you have time left, use it to revisit whichever part of Halton Region appealed to you most.
