Paulista
Introduction
Paulista is a municipality in Pernambuco, Brazil, and part of the Recife metropolitan area. It was incorporated as a city in 1935, and it is the birthplace of the footballer Rivaldo.
Beaches are the main draw, among them Maria Farinha, where you will find the giant Veneza water park. The municipality also stands out within the Recife metropolitan area for its high level of human development.
Getting around
Paulista sits within the same urban transport landscape as Recife, so getting around means plugging into the wider metropolitan network of metro, commuter rail, buses, taxis and ride-hailing. For longer hops, visitors to the Recife area generally rely on the metro and commuter rail, which form the backbone of rail-based transit; look for interchange stations when planning a route, since the network is designed so you can switch between lines without leaving the system. Buses fill in the gaps that rail does not reach. Install Google Maps and Moovit before you arrive — both cover the region and show your boarding point, the bus or train to take, arrival times and total journey duration, and Moovit is especially recommended for journeys mixing bus, train and airport bus services. Build in extra time for delays; adding ten to twenty minutes is a sensible habit, especially when it rains.
On buses, board at the front and pay at the turnstile (catraca) in the middle, then exit at the back; on many services a fare collector (cobrador) takes your payment rather than the driver. Buses do not stop automatically, so put your arm out to signal. Routes use alphanumeric identifiers, and screens above the windshield flash the final destination — check both before boarding. Carry small bills and coins, as collectors often do not carry change. If you are getting off shortly on a packed bus, you can pay the collector without passing through the turnstile and exit at the front, and stops generally have clear posted route information. Taxis and ride-hailing such as Uber are abundant and relatively inexpensive, and are the simplest option late at night, in a group, or when your destination is not well served by fixed routes. Walking works for short distances, but some areas are hilly and steep gradients can double the time you expect a walk to take, so check the elevation profile for longer walks; keep your belongings close and your phone out of sight. Bike rental stations are found in most neighbourhoods and are rented by the minute via an app. From Recife/Guararapes Airport, airport bus services connect with the city, and Moovit is a good tool for planning a combined journey; taxis and ride-hailing offer a straightforward door-to-door alternative on arrival.
Three days in Paulista
Day one: Start in Paulista, a city in Pernambuco, Brazil, just north of Recife. Get your bearings on foot, then use the beaches as your anchor — Maria Farinha and Veneza are the stretches of sand to seek out. For getting around, buses are the mainstay; install Google Maps and Moovit to build your routes and carry a little cash for fares. If you prefer door-to-door, taxis and Uber both work, and walking or bike hire covers shorter hops.

Day two: Give the day to the coast. Move between Maria Farinha and Veneza, settling in at whichever suits your mood, and keep the pace slow — this is beach time, not a checklist. Buses link the stretches, so plan your routes with Moovit before you set out, and carry what you need for a few hours by the water. If you would rather not wait, taxis and Uber are straightforward alternatives, and a bike is a pleasant way to cover the ground between them.

Day three: Use Paulista as your base for a wider look at the area. Recife is within reach, and Guararapes Airport is the arrival and departure point for the region, so build your final day around whichever you need. Buses run the routes between Paulista and Recife; check them on Google Maps or Moovit, and carry your fare. If time is tight, taxis and Uber make the trip simpler, while walking and bike hire are fine for the last stretches close to where you are staying.
