Sao Carlos

Introduction

São Carlos is a Brazilian city and municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo, located 254 kilometres from the city of São Paulo and almost in the centre of the state. The municipality is made up of the headquarters plus the districts of Água Vermelha, Bela Vista São-Carlense, Santa Eudóxia and Vila Nery.

When to go

São Carlos has a humid subtropical climate, so plan around two fairly distinct seasons. Winter is the dry season: rain is scarce and conditions are cooler than the rest of the year, with chilly nights that call for warm layers. Cold spells can be sharp, so don't underestimate how cold it can get after dark.

The rest of the year is hot, and that's when the heaviest rain arrives, so pack for heat and sudden downpours. September stands out for very low humidity, which can leave the air extremely dry, so prepare for heat, heavy rain and dry air depending on when you visit.

Three days in Sao Carlos

Day one: Start in São Carlos itself, getting a feel for the city's Brazilian character before heading out to the surrounding districts. The Vermelha area and Bela Vista São Carlense give you a sense of local life, while Vila Nery offers a quieter, more residential pace. If you arrive in winter, expect cold conditions, so plan indoor stops and warm layers.

Day two: Head toward Santa Eudóxia for a change of scenery and a slower rhythm. The journey out and back takes up a good part of the day, so keep your schedule light. September can still bring cold snaps, so check conditions before you set off.

Day three: Use your last day to revisit whichever part of São Carlos appealed most, whether that's the Carlense side of town or the streets around Vermelha. If you're continuing on to São Paulo, allow time for the journey and pack for cold weather if you're travelling in winter.
