Araxa

Introduction

Araxa is a city of ancient Lycia, known from the writings of Alexander Polyhistor in the second book of his Lyciaca. Ptolemy places it near Sidyma. The site lies at a place called Ören, near Fethiye, on the upper portion of the Xanthus River.

This is a destination for travellers drawn to Lycian history and to a landscape shaped by the Xanthus. Use the references in the ancient sources to orient yourself: the vicinity of Sidyma and the upper Xanthus are your anchors, and Ören is the name to look for on the ground.

Getting around

Araxá is compact and walkable, and the main visitor draws — the thermal springs and the historic centre — sit close together, so you can cover a good deal of the city on foot. Walking is a pleasant way to experience the centre. For longer hops across town, or between your hotel and the attractions, taxis and ride-hailing apps are the most reliable option. Local public transport exists but may run irregularly, so treat it as a backup rather than your primary way of getting around.

Three days in Araxa

Day one: Start in Araxá itself, getting your bearings on foot and taking in the local character of the streets. Make your way to the Calmon Barreto Cultural Foundation to ground yourself in the city's history and collections before an evening meal.

Day two: Use Araxá as your base for wider excursions. Intercity connections link you toward Uberaba, Uberlândia and Belo Horizonte, while Patos and the surrounding Minas region are within reach for a day of exploring. Return to Araxá in the evening.

Day three: Round off your stay with a final morning in the city before departure. Araxá Airport (AAX) handles your onward travel, and cards are accepted for local purchases. Allow time to revisit anything you missed.
