Jamalpur
Introduction
Jamalpur is a city on the bank of the Old Brahmaputra river in the Mymensingh Division of Bangladesh. It serves as the headquarters of both Jamalpur District and Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, so it functions as the administrative centre for the surrounding area.
If you are planning a visit, the riverbank setting is the city's defining feature, placing the Old Brahmaputra at the heart of the landscape.
Getting around
Jamalpur has no metro, tram or formal city bus network, and the railway serves the town from elsewhere rather than moving you around inside it. For everyday trips you rely on road transport: buses, battery-powered auto-rickshaws and other small vehicles, with walking for short hops. Auto-rickshaws are a common sight on local roads and also run on inter-town routes such as the Jamalpur–Mymensingh road. Agree your fare before setting off, and note that driving standards on these routes have drawn local complaint. Don't count on ride-hailing apps; your practical options are vehicles you find on the street or arrange through your hotel, and for a car and driver on a longer trip, ask your accommodation to organise one rather than expecting to flag down a conventional taxi.
The town is compact enough that walking works well for short distances, particularly around the centre and near Fouzdari Mor — the simplest way to cover a few blocks, reach local shops and move between nearby landmarks. For anything further out, or in the heat, take one of the small local vehicles instead. If you're arriving by air, you'll land elsewhere in Bangladesh, most commonly Dhaka, and continue overland: BRTC's air-conditioned buses run the Dhaka–Jamalpur route via Tangail, and private operators also serve the corridor, while the train is the standard alternative and worth keeping in reserve. Because bus services on this corridor have been suspended at times following disputes and incidents involving vehicles and staff, confirm with your hotel or the bus terminal that services are running on your travel date, and allow some flexibility in your plans.
Three days in Jamalpur
Day one: Start in Jamalpur, the main town of Jamalpur District in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, part of Mymensingh Division in Bangladesh. Get your bearings around Fouzdari Mor, a central junction where you can arrange transport and settle into the rhythm of the town. In the afternoon, head to the Old Brahmaputra and spend time along the river, watching the current and the life that gathers on its banks.
Day two: Use Jamalpur as your base for a day on the water and along the riverfront. The Old Brahmaputra is the defining feature of the area, so give it a full day rather than an hour. If you want to move on afterwards, Mymensingh lies within the same division and is reachable from Jamalpur; Dhaka, Tangail and Mymensingh are the places you are most likely to connect through, and BRTC buses serve these routes.
Day three: Return to the town and its surroundings at an easier pace. Because Jamalpur Sadar Upazila covers the town and the countryside around it, you can spend the morning wandering between the two before heading back to Fouzdari Mor for onward transport. For the journey out, auto-rickshaws are useful for short hops, while buses from BRTC and other operators link Jamalpur with Dhaka, Tangail and Mymensingh.
