Hathazari
Introduction
Hathazari is an upazila of Chattogram District in Chattogram Division, Bangladesh. If your travels take you through this part of the country, you are in the administrative area surrounding the city of Chattogram, in the country's south-eastern region.
Getting around
Hathazari has no rail, metro or tram network of its own, so plan entirely around road transport. Buses and minibuses are the backbone of public transport here, and they are the practical way to cover longer hops between Hathazari and neighbouring areas. The clearest documented service is the Hathazari–New Market route, an express "special service" using diesel buses that links Hathazari, Chittagong University and areas adjacent to Chattogram city; it is organised by the Nazirhat–Khagrachari Bus-Minibus Owners' Association. Buy your ticket on board or at the stand rather than through an online pass system, and ask at the counter or with the conductor for the current fare and the next departure, since fares on this route have been adjusted over time in line with fuel prices. Chattogram city services run separately, so a fare change on the Hathazari route does not automatically apply to city buses. There is no documented unified travel card or pass, so pay per journey and carry cash.
Within the upazila, expect local roads and market-centred transport rather than a dense urban grid: Hathazari is divided into 15 union parishads, further split into mouzas and villages, and much of it is rural, so services cluster at bazaars and stands rather than running on a fixed city-style schedule. For short local trips, rely on whatever shared vehicles and local services operate from the nearest stand or bazaar. Walking makes sense around a bazaar, between nearby village lanes, or for the last stretch to a specific address, but it is not realistic for covering the upazila as a whole — walk within a locality and ride between localities. The source material does not document a taxi or ride-hailing network specific to Hathazari, so if you want a private car or taxi, arrange it through your accommodation or from Chattogram rather than expecting to hail one on the street. If your final destination is a specific union or village, get as far as the nearest bazaar or stand by bus and continue locally. Landmarks such as the University of Chittagong in Fatehpur, Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, Hathazari Government University College and the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University campus are useful when telling a driver or conductor where you are going.
Three days in Hathazari
Day one: Base yourself in Hathazari and get your bearings in the town itself. Hathazari sits in Chattogram District, within Chattogram Division, and the town is compact enough to cover on foot. Start with the landmarks around the centre, then head to New Market to buy supplies and get a feel for daily life. If you have time left in the afternoon, walk the grounds of Hathazari Government University College.
Day two: Turn your attention to the area's religious and educational institutions. Visit Al Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, and continue to Fatehpur. In the afternoon, make your way to Chittagong University, one of the main university campuses in the region, and Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Both are reachable from Hathazari, and the two together fill a full day.
Day three: Use Hathazari as a springboard for the wider district. Buses and minibuses run from the town, including services toward Nazirhat and Khagrachari, so you can head out to Chattogram for the day. If you would rather stay close, spend the morning revisiting the parts of Hathazari you liked best before moving on.
