Nawabganj
Getting around
Chapai Nawabganj is a road town, and you should orient yourself around two landmarks: the central bus terminal at Swarupnagar, the natural starting point for arriving and leaving by road, and the BRTC counter at the Octroy intersection, where most intercity and inter-district services are tied. Buy tickets at the terminal counters or at the BRTC counter. Private buses connect the district with the rest of the country, BRTC buses run the Rajshahi route and other inter-district routes, and tempos, mishuk, tank lorries and human haulers known locally as Nasimon, Karimon and Bhutbhuti fill in local movement. There is no documented local rail, metro or tram network, and no specific taxi or ride-hailing services are described, so arrange a private vehicle through your hotel or a local contact rather than counting on an app.
Transport here is vulnerable to indefinite strikes (hartals) called by bus and truck owners' associations and workers' unions. When one is on, private buses, trucks and human haulers stay off the road, ticket counters may close, and road links with the rest of the country can be cut; BRTC buses have historically kept running from the Octroy intersection counter under police escort. Check before you travel whether any action is underway, and build in extra time and a fallback plan for cross-border movement via the Sonamasjid land port, which is especially exposed to these shutdowns. The centre is compact enough to navigate on foot between the Swarupnagar terminal and the Octroy intersection, but for anything beyond it expect to use a vehicle.
Three days in Nawabganj
Day one: Start in Chapai Nawabganj and get your bearings in the town before heading out to Swarupnagar. For getting around, the BRTC and private bus options connect the area with Rajshahi, and you can also look for Octroy services. Keep your first day simple and leave room for the return journey.
