Mingachevir
Introduction
Mingachevir sits astride the Kura River, which divides the city down the middle. It is known as the "city of lights," a name that comes from the hydroelectric power station on the river. The city is one of Azerbaijan's larger urban centres.
Getting around
Mingachevir sits on both banks of the Kura River, which divides the city down the middle, so treat the river as your main reference point for orientation rather than a barrier you are constantly crossing. The centre is compact and flat, laid out on a planned mid-twentieth-century grid, and there is plenty of green space — Sahil Park and Friendship Park are pleasant walking routes and handy landmarks. Walking is comfortable for much of the year, though you will want to avoid the midsummer midday heat; keep in mind that a destination which looks close on a map may still require a bridge crossing.
- There is no metro and no tram; the old trolleybus system was discontinued in 2005, so within the city you rely on road transport and your own two feet.
- Buses are the backbone of public transport. For local journeys, expect marshrutka-style minibuses and city buses rather than a formally mapped network — ask at your accommodation or at the bus terminal which route serves your destination, and carry small change.
- The bus terminal is the hub for longer-distance and intercity services. A regular service runs to Shusha, departing in the morning and returning in the afternoon, with Khojaly and Khankendi as intermediate stops; fares are set per one-way journey and vary by destination. Tickets for this route are sold online only through the Biletim.az portal, and travel to the liberated territories requires the necessary permits, so check your eligibility before booking.
- Taxis are the most flexible option, particularly for the reservoir area, the rowing centre, or parts of the city away from the centre. Flag one on the street or find them near the bus terminal and main squares, and agree on the fare before you set off or confirm that the meter will be used. Ride-hailing availability is thinner here than in Azerbaijan's larger cities, so treat street taxis as your reliable fallback.
- Mingachevir is served by rail and connected to the national network via the Baku–Tbilisi corridor, with interregional service extended to the city in recent years, including a train between Agstafa and Mingachevir. The rail station is the natural arrival point if you come by train.
- Most visitors arriving by air land at Baku and continue overland: train is the most comfortable choice for the long haul, intercity buses run to the Mingachevir Bus Terminal, and a taxi or private transfer is the most direct option if you are carrying luggage or arriving late. From the bus terminal or rail station you can continue by local bus, minibus or taxi to your accommodation.
Three days in Mingachevir
Day one: Start with a walk along the Kura River, which runs through Mingachevir and gives the city its riverside character. Continue to Sahil Park for an easy stroll by the water, then move on to Friendship Park. Walking between these green spaces is the simplest way to get your bearings. In the evening, look into tickets for a ride on the Flag or a boat trip on the Kura; Biletim is the place to check for tickets.
