Donaustadt
Introduction
Donaustadt is the 22nd district of Vienna, Austria, and it sits at the city's eastern edge. As the easternmost district of Vienna, it forms the point where the Austrian capital gives way to the land beyond.
Getting around
Donaustadt is Vienna's largest district by area, stretching from the Danube and Old Danube in the west out toward the Marchfeld in the east and north, with a large share of green space in between. Think of it as a collection of distinct pockets — the modern high-rise quarter of Donau City, the lakeside and riverside areas, and older village centres such as Aspern and Essling — rather than one continuous urban core. Walking across the whole district is not realistic given its size, so use the U-Bahn or a bus to cover the long stretches and walk within a neighbourhood once you arrive.
The U-Bahn is your backbone. Two lines serve the district directly: U1, which stops at Kaisermühlen VIC and Donauzentrum, and U2, which covers Donaumarina, Stadion and Krieau / Messe Wien on the riverside and exhibition-ground side. Several key destinations are themselves U-Bahn stops, which makes them easy to reach and useful as interchange points. Trams and suburban rail fill in the gaps between metro stations, and buses are the workhorse for parts of the district away from the metro lines. The Vienna Airport Bus route VAB 3 runs directly between Donauzentrum, Kaisermühlen, Stadion, Donaumarina and Vienna Airport with no change of vehicle required, useful if you are staying in Donaustadt or visiting the Austria Center Vienna, the Vienna International Centre (UNO City) or the VIECON congress centre; its buses are low-entry and wheelchair-accessible, suitable for strollers, and have air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and USB ports. Other VAB lines connect the airport to hubs elsewhere in Vienna, including Vienna Central Station and Westbahnhof, Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz, Karlsplatz and Wien Praterstern. Services run daily with early-morning and night departures, so the buses operate almost around the clock. For walkability, Donau City and the Kaisermühlen area form the most naturally walkable pocket, while the Donauinsel between the Danube and the New Danube is a linear recreation area ideal for walking and cycling along the water. Outlying village centres and the forested Lobau are better reached by bus or metro plus a walk than on foot from the centre.
Three days in Donaustadt
Day one: Base yourself in Kaisermühlen, the district's most connected quarter, where the U1 Bahn and several trams meet. Walk the shore of the Old Danube, then cross to the Danube proper for views of the water and the towers of Donau City. The Vienna International Centre, also called UNO City, and the Austria Center Vienna stand here, with VIECON nearby. For shopping and a break from the water, Donauzentrum is the district's main mall.
Day two: Head east to Aspern and Essling, where the flat Marchfeld plain opens out and the pace slows. This is walking country rather than sightseeing country, so plan a long loop and take your time. Back toward the river, Donaumarina and Stadion sit along the U2 line, and Krieau and Messe Wien are within reach if something is on at the fairgrounds.
Day three: Use the Vienna Airport Bus (VAB) links if you are heading to Vienna Airport, or connect via Kaisermühlen to the rest of Vienna. Other VAB services run to Vienna Central Station, Westbahnhof, Morzinplatz and Schwedenplatz, so you can end your stay with a straightforward run into the centre. If time allows before you leave, return to the Old Danube for a last quiet walk.
