Formosa

Introduction

Formosa is the capital of the Argentine province of the same name, set on the banks of the Paraguay River directly across from the Paraguayan town of Alberdi. It sits far to the north of Buenos Aires along National Route 11, the road that ties this stretch of the country together.

The river defines the city's position and its connection to Paraguay, while the surrounding province gives Formosa its own distinct character within Argentina's northeast. If you are travelling the route north, the city makes a natural stop on the way toward the border.

Three days in Formosa

Day one: Start in Formosa, the capital city of the Argentine province of the same name, set on the banks of the Paraguay River. Get your bearings in the city itself before crossing into neighbouring Alberdi, a Paraguayan town on the opposite bank, where the two countries meet along the river.

Day two: Use Formosa as your base for exploring the riverfront and the life of the city, which looks across the water toward Paraguay. The Paraguay River shapes the rhythm of the area, and the border crossing to Alberdi makes for an easy excursion if you want to see both sides of the river in a single day.

Day three: If you are arriving from Buenos Aires, National Route links the capital to Formosa and the wider region, so plan your onward travel with that connection in mind. Spend your last day revisiting the parts of Formosa and the riverbank you enjoyed most before heading on.
