Cuito

Introduction

Cuíto, once known as Silva Porto, is the capital of Bié Province in central Angola. The city and its surrounding municipality form a provincial hub in the country's central highlands.

When to go

Cuito sits high on the Bie Plateau, so despite its tropical latitude you'll find unusually cool conditions year-round, divided between a dry, cool stretch and a long, heavy rainy season. The cool dry period is the coolest stretch of the year, with almost no rain: you can expect clear, dry, cool conditions, and chilly evenings at this elevation, so pack layers for after dark.

September and October are the hottest months, with a little rain beginning to arrive as the heat builds before the main rains set in. The main rainy season then brings heavy rain over a long wet season, with frequent downpours and wet roads, though the plateau elevation keeps temperatures moderated. Plan around the wet roads if you're travelling during the rains.

Three days in Cuito

Day one: Start in Cuíto, the city also known as Silva Porto, and get your bearings in the centre of Bié Province. Take the day at an easy pace to adjust to the Bie Plateau, whose altitude keeps the air milder than much of Angola. Wander the streets of the city itself and let the layout of the Plan area orient you before planning the rest of your stay.

Day two: Give the day to the city's history, tracing the Silva Porto name through the streets and squares of Cuíto. Spend time in the centre of town, where the everyday life of Bié Province plays out, and pause to take in the plateau setting that shapes the city's character.

Day three: Use your last day to slow down and take in the wider surroundings of Cuíto from the edge of the Bie Plateau. If your visit falls in September or October, plan around the warm, dry conditions typical of that time of year. Finish with a final walk through the Plan and the streets you have come to know.
