Nor Nork

Introduction

Nor Nork is one of Yerevan's districts, sitting at the eastern edge of Armenia's capital. It borders several other districts — Nork-Marash, Kentron and Kanaker-Zeytun to the west, Avan to the north and Erebuni to the south — while Kotayk Province forms its eastern boundary.

Use Nor Nork as a point of orientation on the eastern side of the city, with the central Kentron district within reach to the west and the surrounding districts and province framing its edges.

Getting around

Nor Nork is a large residential district on Yerevan's eastern side, not a sightseeing core, so most journeys begin with a ride into the centre. The metro does not reach the district and there is no tram network to fall back on, so plan around city buses, taxis and walking. Nor Nork serves as a terminus for several bus routes, which makes it fairly easy to find a bus heading into town; useful routes include N3 to Arno Babajanyan / Zoravar Andranik, N8 to Davtashen 4th Block, N22, N36, N53, N60 and N97 to Nubarashen. Route listings give numbers and endpoints only, so confirm fares and payment methods locally and allow extra time outside peak hours. If you arrive at Zvartnots Airport, bus N100 runs to French Square, and the Central Bus Station connects onward to other parts of the city.

Nor Nork is divided into smaller neighbourhoods, including the nine blocks of Nor Nork and Bagrevand, and bus destination boards often use these names rather than "Nor Nork" alone — check carefully so you end up in the right block. For taxis and ride-hailing, which are handy for trips between residential blocks or late at night, give your driver the specific block or neighbourhood. Walking works best for short trips within a single neighbourhood; Davit Bek street, Gai avenue, Tevosyan street, Gyurjyan street, Minski street and Vilnyus street are useful reference points. Landmarks and green spaces such as Saint Sarkis Church, Fridtjof Nansen Park, Vaspurakan Park, the Yerevan Zoo and Yerevan Water World are spread across the district, so use buses or taxis to move between them rather than trying to cover everything on foot.

Three days in Nor Nork

Day one: Base yourself in Nor Nork and get your bearings on foot. The district sits across the river from central Yerevan, so use the time to wander its streets and blocks and see how the neighbourhood works day to day. When you are ready for the city proper, head over to Kentron, the centre, and take in landmarks such as Saint Sarkis Church and French Square. Round off the day with a stroll in one of the city's green spaces, whether Fridtjof Nansen Park or Vaspurakan Park.

Day two: Give the day to Yerevan's family-friendly side. The Yerevan Zoo and Yerevan Water World make an easy pairing, and both suit a relaxed pace. If you would rather stay closer to base, walk the streets of Nor Nork instead and treat the day as a slow one. In the evening, cross into Kentron for a meal and a wander.

Day three: Look beyond the centre. Head out towards Erebuni to the south, or take the route towards Kanaker, Zeytun and Avan to the north, and see how the city spreads into its surrounding districts. If you are leaving Armenia, allow time to reach Zvartnots Airport, or the Central Bus Station if your onward journey is by road. Finish with a last walk through Nor Nork before you go.
