Gardez
Introduction
Gardez is a city in southeastern Afghanistan and serves as the capital of Paktia Province. It falls within the jurisdiction of Gardez District, and the city is led by a mayor.
Getting around
Within Gardez, road vehicles handle almost every trip. Local taxis and informal shared taxis are the main way to get around town and out to nearby villages, and local town buses are limited, so for most short journeys your realistic choices are a shared taxi or a private hire. Meters are rare and fares are locally set and low, so agree the price before boarding. Cars are typically rented with a driver, since self-drive is uncommon for visitors, and rates are arranged privately. Short trips on foot are feasible in the central areas, where you'll find bazaars, business centres and parks; dress conservatively, especially in bazaars and near tribal areas, and ask permission before photographing people. There is no metro or tram, and no domestic passenger rail network serves Gardez, so rail is not an option.
- For longer journeys, shared minivans and coaches connect Gardez with Kabul and nearby provincial centres, departing from Kabul's intercity minivan and bus hubs. Fares are paid locally and are low by international standards, with no advance booking system, so arrange your seat at the departure point.
- Travel times vary with road conditions and security checks, and civilian travel can be unpredictable because of checkpoints and security operations.
- Private taxis or hired cars are available for longer trips, including to Kabul; a 4x4 is recommended for provincial roads and adverse weather.
- Ride-hailing apps are not part of the transport picture here; arrangements are made directly with drivers or through local contacts.
- Gardez has a small airstrip in the northern part of the city, in the same area as Paktia University, next to the Kabul–Gardez Highway. There are no regular commercial flights, and taxi availability there is very limited, so arrange your onward transport in advance if possible. The main international gateway is Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, with onward travel to Gardez by road.
Independent travel is described as unsafe, with a volatile security situation and active conflict, so check current travel advice before planning any trip.
When to go
Gardez has a cold semi-arid climate: precipitation is low across the year, and what falls comes mostly in winter and spring. Summer is the dry stretch, with little to no rain, making it the most reliable season for travel weather-wise, though the climate stays cold semi-arid overall.
Winter is cold and snowy, and it brings the bulk of the year's limited precipitation. Snow can affect travel and daily life, so expect wintry conditions if you visit then. Spring shares the wetter pattern with winter, so conditions are more unsettled than during the rest of the year.
Three days in Gardez
Day one: Start in Gardez, the capital of Paktia Province in Afghanistan, and get your bearings in the city itself and the surrounding Gardez District. Within Gardez, local transport is short and cars are the usual way to get around; for longer hops, fares are modest. If you arrive from Kabul, travel by private ride along the Gardez Highway is the straightforward option, and Hamid Karzai International Airport is the gateway for arrivals from further afield.
Day two: Give a morning to Paktia University, an independent institution and a natural anchor for your time in the city. Pair it with a wander through the district to see how local life is organised outside the centre. Summer is warm, winter brings snow, and spring is the gentlest season for walking; plan your outdoor hours around the weather rather than against it.
Day three: Use your last day to slow down and take in the rhythm of Gardez at street level, moving between the centre and the district by car or on short local trips. Keep the schedule loose so you can adjust to conditions, and leave time to arrange your onward travel, whether back along the Gardez Highway toward Kabul or to Hamid Karzai International Airport.
