Walk the Cape Malay Road March Through Bo-Kaap
At 20:30 on Wednesday 31 December, the first drums start on Rose Street in Bo-Kaap, and the procession moves off through the CBD. This is the Cape Malay Road March, the New Year tradition of choirs, traditional drums and marching bands that fills the city's streets with sound. Spectators line the route, and it costs nothing to join them. The march runs along Wale Street and concludes on Adderley Street, carrying on until roughly 04:00 on Thursday 1 January. Position yourself on Rose, Wale or Adderley Street and let the procession come to you.
Because the CBD closes to traffic from 17:00 on 31 December until 04:00 on 1 January, plan to walk in. Closures cover Wale Street (Pentz to Adderley), Adderley Street (Wale to Darling), Queen Victoria Street (Wale to Bloem), Longmarket Street (Burg to Adderley), Burg Street (Longmarket to Wale), Long Street, Loop Street and Bree Street (Church to Wale), Rose Street (Wale to Strand), Spin Street (Adderley to Parliament) and Church Street (Burg to Adderley). Choose Your Countdown: Kirstenbosch, Newlands or the Waterfront
Three big, distinct ways to see in 2026, each with its own crowd and its own soundtrack.
- Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert — Mango Groove headlines at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, with The Billy Joel Experience supporting. Gates open at 19:00, the concert starts at 20:30, and the backdrop is Table Mountain. Tickets are sold via Webtickets.
- SA20 cricket at Newlands — MI Cape Town, the defending champions, take on Pretoria Capitals at Newlands Cricket Ground. The match starts at 17:30 and gates open three hours earlier. Tickets are available through the MI Cape Town website. General parking is at Groote Schuur Primary on Campground Road and Groote Schuur High School on Palmyra Road.
- V&A Waterfront — a free, family-friendly celebration with live performances from 18:00 through the evening. The line-up includes Emo & Loukmaan Adams, Zoë Modiga, GoodLuck, DJ Shezzy K and the Starlight Band. The City advises arriving early, expecting delays and using public transport; pedestrian volumes are high.
Getting In and Out Without Losing the Night
New Year's Eve traffic concentrates hard in two zones. Around the CBD and the Waterfront, expect heavy volumes on Nelson Mandela Boulevard, FW De Klerk Boulevard, Buitengracht Street, Walter Sisulu Avenue, Portswood Road, Dock Road, Ebenezer Road, Duncan Road, Beach Road, Eastern Boulevard, Granger Bay Boulevard, Fort Wynyard Street, Haul Road, Helen Suzman Boulevard, Somerset Road and Green Point Main Road. The City's consistent advice is to come early, leave the car and take public transport. If you are driving to the cricket, the two Groote Schuur school lots are the designated general parking. If you are heading to Bo-Kaap or Adderley Street, treat the closure list above as your map and build in walking time.
What Else Is On, and What Comes After
Beyond the headline events, the 2026 season includes the debut WAV Festival, presented by Afro Nation, with DJs and artists including Wale and Isaiah Falls, and the tenth anniversary of Made in Mykonos. If you are staying into January, the racing calendar opens with the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth race meeting on Saturday 10 January 2026.
One thing worth knowing about the season's politics: the City of Cape Town's rerouting of the Cape Minstrel Parade (Tweede Nuwe Jaar / Kaapse Klopse Karnival) to DHL Stadium drew criticism from the ANC Western Cape, which called it commercialisation and cultural erasure, and from the EFF. The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association sought legal intervention, and the City placed responsibility for the route change on event organisers. The Road March on New Year's Eve itself remains a free, street-level procession through Bo-Kaap and the CBD.

Book the Kirstenbosch concert or the Newlands match early, decide whether your night ends on Adderley Street with the drums or at the Waterfront with the bands, and sort out how you will move between them before 17:00 on 31 December, when the CBD closes.
