Start with the Saturday night market at Maponya Mall
It is just after six on a Saturday evening and the parking lot at Maponya Mall has turned into a food-and-craft street: 100 local small businesses trading side by side, plates of Soweto cooking moving hand to hand, fashion and arts and crafts stalls lit against the dark, a stage running local entertainment and FNB trading tools on hand for anyone thinking of starting something of their own. That is the Soweto Small Business Showcase, and it is the clearest place to feel the city's commercial energy in one evening. The 2026 edition runs Saturday 26 September, 10:00–18:00, followed by the Saturday Night Market from 18:00–22:00, and continues Sunday 27 September, 10:00–18:00. It is presented by Soweto Tourism with Kamers/Makers, FNB and Maponya Mall, and if you are a trader rather than a visitor, stalls go for R500.
Time your trip around the calendar Soweto keeps
Soweto's year has a rhythm, and you can build a visit around it. The heaviest concentration of public programming falls between late September and early December, with the tourism sector's own set-piece occasions earlier in the year.
- Late February — Soweto Tourism Awards, Black Tie Edition. 26 February 2026 at Orlando Stadium (Orlando Amstel Arena, Mayoral Suite). Media and industry networking runs 16:00–18:00; the awards ceremony and entertainment run 18:30–23:59. The edition marks 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising.
- Late September — Soweto Small Business Showcase. 26–27 September 2026 at Maponya Mall, with the Saturday Night Market extending the first day to 22:00.
- Late October — Soweto Investment Conference 2026. Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October 2026, 10:00–17:00, at the Soweto Hotel in Kliptown, Freedom Charter Square. The theme is "Improving Trade and Investment," with sessions on infrastructure, tourism, retail, SMME development and local job creation. - Early December — Soweto100. 6 December 2026: a 100 km cycling ride through Soweto's streets, framed as a "kasified tourism exploration" of the township's heritage architecture, with a crit race format including iBhoni laps and an iBhoni music festival.
The 2025 editions show the pattern repeats: the Soweto Investment Conference ran 25–26 November 2025 at the Eyethu Multipurpose Centre in Mofolo, on local economic empowerment, covering enterprise development, the stokvel economy, the spaza economy and the State of CJT Economy Report; the Visit Soweto Expo ran at Maponya Mall on 27–28 September 2025; and the Invest Soweto Golf Day was played at Soweto Golf Country Club on 20 November 2025, a 4 Ball Better Ball Stableford teeing off at 10:00.
Ride the streets, then eat where the traders are
The single best way to cover ground is on two wheels. Soweto100 on 6 December 2026 puts you through 100 km of Soweto streets with heritage architecture as the running commentary, and the iBhoni music festival gives the day a finish line worth staying for. If you would rather watch than ride, station yourself along the route and let the peloton come to you.
For eating, follow the traders. The Soweto Small Business Showcase at Maponya Mall is the most concentrated gathering of local food vendors on the calendar, spanning food, fashion, arts and crafts and services across two days. The Saturday Night Market on 26 September 2026 is the version to plan an evening around — arrive hungry between 18:00 and 22:00 and work the stalls.
Give a morning back to the city
If your visit lands in April, there is a way to be useful rather than just present. The Keep Soweto Attractions Clean Programme 2026 runs a community clean-up at Soweto tourism sites on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 April 2026, recruiting 100 unemployed Soweto youth on a paid stipend. Applicants must be Soweto residents, unemployed, and available on both days; the closing date is 4 April 2026 at 23:59. If you are a resident, this is a direct line into the tourism economy. If you are visiting, it tells you something about how the city maintains the places you have come to see.
Base yourself in Kliptown or Mofolo
Kliptown is where the Soweto Investment Conference 2026 convenes, at the Soweto Hotel on Freedom Charter Square — a location that puts you in the middle of the township's political geography as well as its business agenda. Mofolo hosted the 2025 edition at the Eyethu Multipurpose Centre and remains a useful anchor for the eastern side of Soweto. Maponya Mall, in turn, is the retail and events hub you will return to more than once: it carries both the Small Business Showcase and, in 2025, the Visit Soweto Expo. Orlando is where the year's most formal night happens, at Orlando Stadium.
