Fireworks Over New Beach as the Year Turns
On the night of 31 December, the sand at New Beach fills with people facing the water. The Indian Ocean is warm, the air is thick with salt and smoke from the food stalls, and the sky above the beachfront becomes the city's shared living room. Durban's New Year's period opens with fireworks at New Beach on 31 December, part of the Durban Tourism summer programme. Arrive early, claim a patch of sand or a spot along the promenade, and let the crowd's countdown carry you into 2027.
Join the New Year Carnival on 2 January
Two days after the fireworks, Durban stages its New Year Carnival, listed in the summer programme for 2 January 2027. The route and timings were still being finalised at the time of the programme's launch, so treat the date as fixed and the details as something to check closer to the day. What you can count on is a city that turns its streets over to the carnival tradition - plan to be in the centre of Durban that afternoon, and watch local listings for the final route.
Markets, Heritage and the City Between the Celebrations
The days around New Year are the right time to work through the established attractions Durban Tourism folds into its summer programme. These run through the season rather than on a single date, so slot them into the gaps between concerts and fireworks.
- Victoria Street Market - the city's long-standing Indian market, good for spices, incense and the smell of the market that hangs over the surrounding blocks.
- Inanda Heritage Route - a route through Inanda that includes the Ohlange Institute, associated with John Langalibalele Dube. A half-day at least; go with a guide or a clear plan.
- Ricksha Bus tours - a hop-on, hop-off way to cover the beachfront and the city centre without working out your own transport.
- Point Waterfront gondola cruises - a slow look at the harbour and the Point from the water.
- Durban Botanic Gardens' Trail of Lights - included in the summer programme, though dates and ticket information were not given at launch. Check with the Gardens before you build an evening around it.
Concerts and Beach Fests in the Run-Up
If you can stretch the trip beyond 1 January, the same programme gives you a run of events across December that show what Durban does with its summer. The Gagasi FM Beach Fest takes over Moses Mabhida People's Park on 5 December, and the Anywhere In Your City music festival runs at the same People's Park on 19–20 December. Sean Paul plays the ICC Durban on 6 December. In KwaMashu, Princess Magogo Stadium hosts Usuku Lomshunqo on 28 November and the INK-Kasi Xperience on 19 December. Line-ups, ticket prices and logistics come from the individual organisers, so buy through the event's own channels rather than assuming a single city-wide ticket.
What to Eat and Where to Base Yourself
Durban's New Year food is the food the city eats all summer: bunny chow from the Indian quarter around Victoria Street Market, grilled meat and seafood along the beachfront, and the spice-heavy curries that come with the city's Indian heritage. The market itself is the place to taste and buy - go hungry, go in the morning when the stalls are fully stocked, and take your time. Base yourself on or near the beachfront if fireworks and the New Year Carnival are your priorities; the centre and the Point Waterfront put you within reach of the harbour cruises and the Ricksha Bus routes.
Plan Around the Programme, Not Against It
Durban Tourism launched this summer programme on 30 September at Tyler's in Umdloti, and it is explicitly a starting point - organisers fill in line-ups, ticket prices and logistics as the season approaches. Durban Tourism also released a QR code linking to a one-page destination supplement, useful for keeping the whole season in one place. Book your accommodation on the beachfront early for the 31 December fireworks, hold 2 January for the New Year Carnival, and check the programme's own channels closer to the date for the carnival route and for the Botanic Gardens' Trail of Lights. Start with the flights and the bed; the rest of Durban's summer will fill itself in around you.
