Start on the City Hall Steps in January
You hear the drums before you see them. On the January morning of the Durban New Year Carnival Parade, the streets around City Hall in the city centre fill with dance groups, musicians and performers moving through the CBD in a procession that has become the city's loudest welcome to the year. Arrive early, stand on the pavement rather than behind the barriers, and let the parade come to you. When the floats have passed, walk the short distance to the Moses Mabhida Stadium precinct, where the Dubai Souk Market sets up for the summer season with street food, crafts and local vendors trading under the stadium's arch. It is the easiest introduction to Durban you will get: one morning, two crowds, both of them in a good mood.
Spend a Year on the Beachfront
The Durban Beachfront is the thread that runs through the city's calendar, and the cheapest way to join in is simply to turn up. On Cycle Sunday — held in August, again for a spring ride in October and a summer ride in December — the beachfront road closes to traffic and belongs to cyclists and pedestrians. Bring or rent a bike, or just walk the closed stretch with everyone else.
- Durban City Marathon (March) — the route takes in beachfront promenade sections, so the promenade is your grandstand.
- Tinman Triathlon (November) — swim, cycle and run, staged along the same beachfront.
- SPAR Women's Challenge (June) — a run and walk event at Kings Park Stadium, open to a broad field.
- Heritage Challenge Run (September) — a road race timed to Heritage Month.
If you would rather watch than sweat, pick a spot on the promenade on race morning, buy a coffee, and let the field stream past.
Book Around the Big Dates
Two events in 2026 have days attached, and they are worth planning a trip around. The Dusi Canoe Marathon runs 19–21 February 2026, a three-day river route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban with rapids and portages — follow it from the banks or the bridges. The Comrades Marathon in June is the Durban–Pietermaritzburg ultramarathon, and the city treats it as a public occasion. Most other fixtures are listed by month only, so treat the month as your anchor and confirm the exact day closer to the time.
- Midmar Mile (February) — open-water swim at Midmar Dam near Howick, with multiple race categories across a weekend.
- Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival (April, Easter weekend) — school rugby at Kearsney College, with teams from across South Africa.
- Tour Durban (April) — cycling on coastal roads over several distances.
- Durban July (July) — the major horse-racing event at Greyville Racecourse.
- Amashova Durban Classic (July) — a cycling race finishing in Durban.
Eat and Drink Your Way Through the Trade and Festival Months
May brings Africa's Travel Indaba to the Durban ICC, one of the continent's largest tourism trade exhibitions — a good moment for the city's food and hospitality scene to be on show. In October the Pick n Pay Wine & Food Festival arrives with wine tastings, food stalls and live entertainment. And in the stadium precinct in August, the NEXT Music Festival brings multiple artists to the Moses Mabhida Stadium area. Summer, from December, is when the citywide festive season events take over: seasonal markets, concerts and community celebrations across Durban. Wherever you are in the city in December, ask locally what is on that week — the programme is spread across neighbourhoods rather than concentrated in one venue.
Head North to Umhlanga, or South on the N2
For a change of scene, take the short trip north to the Umhlanga beachfront, where the Rage Festival marks the end of the school year in late November with a beachfront celebration. If you are based on the South Coast, Durban is roughly a two-hour drive up the N2, which makes the city's calendar reachable as a day trip or a weekend. The South Coast Marathon at Shelly Beach in September and the sani2c mountain bike stage race through the southern Drakensberg to the coast in May both give you reasons to build a longer route around the city rather than flying in and out.
Durban's calendar rewards a little forward planning: pick your month, check the exact day closer to the time, and build the rest of the trip around the beachfront, the stadium precinct and the city centre. Start with the January carnival and the summer markets, and you will have the measure of the place before the year is out.
