Follow the Woodsmoke Up Through the Alleys
Dusk settles early over San Marino in late December, and the alleys of the historic centre fill with the smell of roasting chestnuts and sweet pastry drifting from wooden chalets. Strings of lights run overhead between stone walls; somewhere ahead a gospel choir rehearses, and children queue at the door of the House of Father Christmas. This is the Christmas of Wonders (Natale delle Meraviglie), the Republic's annual Christmas event, which takes over the squares and streets of San Marino Città from December through Epiphany in early January. The programme, themes and street artists change each year, with the full schedule published on the Republic's official tourism channels — so check those before you travel, then let the evening unfold on foot.
Wander the Wooden Chalets
The market is the spine of the whole event: wooden chalets set along the alleys and squares, selling local craftsmanship, decorations, gifts and clothing alongside food stalls. Look for Sammarinese sweets, Torta Tre Monti and bustrengo. The recurring market hours are 10:00–19:30 on 6–8 and 13–14 December, 20–31 December, and 1–6 January, with shorter hours of 15:00–19:30 on 25 December and 1 January. Go early in the day for a quieter browse, or come back after dark when the lights do most of the work.
Skate Beneath a Rock Amphitheatre
Beside the markets, the Village of Wonders is the family quarter, with game trails, workshops and entertainment. Its House of Father Christmas and Elf houses keep children occupied: a storyteller, a face painter and a postman collecting letters. Then walk to the Crossbowmen's Quarry (Cava dei Balestrieri), a natural rock amphitheatre where an ice rink is set up for the festive season — timetables are published each year by the organiser. In the evenings and on holidays, expect concerts and live music in the centre: gospel choirs, folk bands and jazz.
Time Your Visit to the Weekends
Street artists — jugglers, mimes, living statues and small theatre companies — perform on the opening weekends, so build your trip around those if you want the fullest streets. The event runs from December to Epiphany, and the market calendar above is the recurring pattern rather than a confirmed 2026 schedule; verify dates on official channels before booking. Restaurants in the historic centre serve themed festive menus through the season, which makes a long evening of market browsing easy to stretch into dinner.
Stay for the Toast on 31 December
New Year's Eve brings a party to the squares of the historic centre on 31 December, with music, shows and a collective toast. If you are based in Valdragone, treat the centre as your evening destination and plan to walk the lit streets rather than drive between them.
Start with the official tourism channels for San Marino: confirm the 2026 market dates and the ice-rink timetable, book a table in the historic centre for Christmas Eve, and give yourself at least one evening to simply follow the lights and the smell of bustrengo through the alleys.
