Ring In the New Year at Skansen

At 8:00 PM on December 31, the gates of Skansen reopen and the crowds stream up the hill onto Djurgården. On the Solliden stage, live music plays through the evening, and the whole celebration is broadcast nationally. Then, at midnight, a prominent Swedish figure steps up to recite Tennyson's "Ring Out, Wild Bells" — a custom observed here for over a century. From the open-air museum's elevated ground you can watch fireworks break over the city center. With its historic village buildings and Nordic animals, this is the most reliable choice if you're visiting with children.

Find Your Fireworks Vantage Point

The fireworks are launched near Gamla Stan, so the best views come from elevated ground or the waterfront. Arrive early; these spots fill up.

Concerts and a New Year's Day Tradition

If you'd rather spend the evening indoors, Stockholm's concert calendar is unusually generous. Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan) in Gamla Stan typically holds a classical concert on the afternoons of December 31 and January 1. The Royal Opera stages its traditional gala. And on New Year's Day, Stockholm City Hall hosts a free concert — an easy, low-cost way to start the year.

Eat, Drink and Dance Through the Night

Most Stockholmers celebrate at home on December 31, which means many restaurants close for the evening — so if you want a table, book months ahead. Where you do find one, look for the traditional nyårssupé: Toast Skagen to start, lobster soup, then grilled reindeer fillet, salmon or steak, finishing with panna cotta or saffron Lussekatter buns. Dinner cruises offer the same meal with the fireworks viewed from the water.

For nightlife, head to Södermalm, the city's main going-out district. Venues to know include Ambassadeur, Berns, Hell's Kitchen, Sturecompagniet and Spy Bar, while Nalen hosts a New Year's masquerade. Tickets sell out quickly; some venues offer all-inclusive dinner packages and apply holiday dress codes.

Know Before You Go

Start with the two things that decide everything else: a table or a ticket, and a bed. Book your restaurant and your New Year's Eve venue first, then lock in flights and accommodation around them — Stockholm fills fast for the last night of the year, and the best vantage points, stages and dining rooms are claimed well before the bells ring.
