Christmas Eve in Piața Constituției
Step off the metro at Izvor or Eroilor and walk toward the floodlit bulk of the Palace of the Parliament: on Christmas Eve the vast esplanade of Piața Constituției fills with wooden chalets, a giant illuminated tree and a panorama wheel turning against the palace facade. Somewhere ahead of you a choir is finishing a carol on the main stage, the air smells of mulled wine and grilled sausage, and the crowd moves slowly between stalls of crafts, gingerbread and hot tea. This is the city's headline Christmas market, run by the City Hall, and Christmas Eve is one of its fullest nights.
Expect roughly 120 wooden chalets, an extended food court of Romanian dishes, a covered ice-skating rink, a children's train and Santa's House, which usually admits visitors by timed entry. Entry to the market itself is free; you pay in lei for food, drink, rides and attractions. A loop of the whole site takes most people 60 to 120 minutes, longer if you skate or queue for the wheel.
Where the Other Markets Take You
Bucharest spreads its Christmas cheer across several markets, each with a different character. If Piața Constituției feels too dense on Christmas Eve, one of these may suit you better.
- Opera Christmas Market, National Opera Esplanade — family-oriented and quieter, with a small children's ice rink, creative workshops for ornaments and seasonal crafts, an artisan market of local products and a small stage for carol performances.
- West Side Christmas Market, Drumul Taberei Park (Sector 6) — known for the city's most extensive light installations, with illuminated pathways through the park, an open-air ice rink, a carousel, a train ride, themed photo zones and Santa's Workshop. Food prices here tend to be moderate compared with the centre.
- Băneasa Christmas World, Băneasa Shopping City — in the northern commercial district, with a panoramic wheel, ice rink, classic carousel, Santa's House, themed shows and mascots, and an expanded food-truck area. Note that this one runs a reduced schedule on 24 December and closes on 25 December.
- Smaller festive zones — the Old Town and Piața Universității area often host a smaller market, and individual districts sometimes run their own.
Beyond the markets, December ice rinks also operate at Drumul Taberei, Veranda and Opera Comică.
Carols, Concerts and the Evening's Rhythm
The main stage at Piața Constituției hosts daily performances through the season — carols, choirs and concerts — most evenings, so Christmas Eve programming is a safe bet even if the exact line-up is published only shortly beforehand. For something more formal, pair your evening with a concert at the Romanian Athenaeum, the city's landmark concert hall.
Timing matters. Recent editions of the main market have run roughly midday to 22:00, with later closing at weekends, and weekday evenings and the earlier part of the evening are the calmest; later evenings and weekends bring the full lights-and-music atmosphere at its busiest. Christmas Eve tends to fall into the busy category, so arrive earlier if you want room to move.
What to Eat, and How to Get There
The food court at Piața Constituției is where you graze: cozonac, kürtőskalács-style chimney cakes, grilled winter snacks, seasonal sweets, local honey and jams, hot tea and, above all, vin fiert — mulled wine — poured from the chalets. The Opera and West Side markets add their own artisan and food stalls, with the Drumul Taberei site generally the kinder to your wallet.
Getting around is straightforward if you plan for the crowds. The metro is the most predictable option, with a short walk through central streets at the end; STB buses and trams serve the nearby neighbourhoods but slow down at peak hours. Late at night, ride-hailing is your best bet, though expect drop-off restrictions around the pedestrian-heavy market zones.
Pair It With the Old Town
After the market, walk into the Old Town — 30 to 45 minutes at an easy pace — where lit terraces stay open into the dusk. It is the natural second act to a Christmas Eve at Piața Constituției: leave the chalets behind, follow the lights toward the centre, and finish with a drink on a heated terrace while the city winds down toward Christmas Day.
Planning Your 2026 Christmas Eve
The pattern is reliable even when the calendar is not yet fixed: the main market at Piața Constituției typically opens in late November or early December and runs to around 26 December, sometimes into early January, with the 2025–2026 edition running 29 November to 28 December 2025. Exact 2026 dates and hours are set annually and normally announced in late October or November, so check the official city and market channels before you book. Build your Christmas Eve around an early evening at the market, a carol performance on the main stage, a plate of cozonac and a cup of vin fiert — and let the walk into the Old Town take you the rest of the way.
