Second Day of Christmas in Krakow 2026

Walk Into the Glow of Rynek Główny

Step out of Floriańska Street and the square opens up around you: the Gothic bulk of St. Mary's Basilica on one side, the long arcade of the Cloth Hall down the middle, and between them a grid of wooden stalls lit against the early dark. It is the Second Day of Christmas, and Kraków's main Christmas market is still in full swing on Rynek Główny in the Old Town. The air carries mulled wine, grilled food and roasted nuts; the stalls hold hand-painted baubles, ceramics, wooden objects, textiles and regional gifts. Entry is free, so you can wander the rows as long as the cold allows, then duck into a doorway to warm up and come back for more.

If you are arriving by train, walk from Kraków Główny via the Barbican, St. Florian's Gate and Floriańska Street — roughly 15 to 20 minutes on foot. From the airport, the SKA1 train runs to Kraków Główny in about 20 minutes, with the airport station linked to the terminal by a covered footbridge.

Eat Your Way Around the Stalls

The market kitchen is built for standing outdoors in December. Menus typical of past editions have included pierogi, hot soups, grilled dishes, smoked mountain cheese (oscypek), gingerbread, roasted nuts, cakes and mulled wine. None of this is a confirmed 2026 menu, but it is what the stalls reliably do — and it is exactly what you want in your hands when the temperature drops.

Bring some złoty in cash. Cards are widely accepted, but not guaranteed at every stall.

See the Szopki, Kraków's Own Nativity Scenes

Kraków's nativity scenes are not cribs in the usual sense. Szopka krakowska are elaborate, spired structures that reference the city's towers and historic buildings, and the tradition is inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list. It runs separately from the market programme, which makes it worth planning around.

If you are in the city over the Christmas period rather than in early December, the Krzysztofory exhibition is where you see the finished work.

Wander Beyond the Square

The Old Town market is the centre of gravity, but the surrounding districts reward a longer walk. A smaller market at Mały Rynek ran in the previous season with crafts, local traditions and workshops — no 2026 confirmation, so treat it as a possibility rather than a plan.

The 2026–27 market dates are listed provisionally as 27 November 2026 – 6 January 2027 by a local events calendar, not verified against an official City of Krakow announcement. For comparison, the official 2025–26 season ran 28 November 2025 – 1 January 2026. The closing date of 6 January 2027 is likewise unconfirmed by the city. If you are building a trip around the Second Day of Christmas, you are comfortably inside the window either way.

Time Your Visit Around the Cold and the Crowds

December in Kraków is cold, and snow is possible but not guaranteed — dress for the first and treat the second as a bonus. Weekdays and earlier in the day are quieter, which matters most on the square itself, where the stalls and the sightlines fill up fast after dark. The lights come on early, so an afternoon arrival gives you the market in daylight and again in full glow without moving more than a few steps.

Start with the train times and a bed near the Old Town, then build your days outward from Rynek Główny: the szopki if you are there in early December, the Krzysztofory exhibition if you are not, and the stalls on the square in between. Book early, pack for the cold, and let the Second Day of Christmas find you somewhere between St. Mary's and the Cloth Hall.
