Steel Pans at Sunset on Eastern Parkway
The bass from the steel-pan trucks reaches you before the parade does. On Labor Day itself, Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights becomes the spine of the West Indian American Day Carnival, the main parade rolling westbound through Crown Heights toward Grand Army Plaza. Before that, the pre-dawn J'ouvert — a Trinidadian tradition — starts early morning near Grand Army Plaza and moves down Flatbush Avenue at sunrise, so if you want the full arc of the day you'll be out while it's still dark and still dancing when the mas bands, sound systems and Caribbean flags fill the parkway. The carnival's roots run to 1947, when Trinidadian immigrant Jessie Waddell held an indoor pre-Lenten celebration in Harlem; Carlos Lezama moved it to Eastern Parkway in 1969. Expect one to three million spectators. Vendors line the route with roti, jerk chicken and doubles.
Carnival Week opens earlier in the week, with Soca Fest midweek, Junior Carnival and Youth Fest costumed processions on the Saturday, and that evening the New York Panorama steel-pan competition at the Brooklyn Museum plaza — the largest steel-pan competition in North America. Dimanche Gras, the soca concert, falls the night before the main parade.
One Last Summer at the US Open
The 2026 US Open runs 23 August to 13 September at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens — a 22-day schedule, the longest in the tournament's near-150-year history. Labor Day weekend lands in the third round of men's and women's singles, with day and evening sessions at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and the Grandstand. More than a million fans are expected across the tournament. Arthur Ashe Stadium is midway through an $800 million redevelopment, and 2026 is the first year of its initial phase: 2,000 additional courtside seats and an expanded promenade-level concourse. A thousand discounted tickets at $100 each were made available to NYC residents for main-draw matches through Tuesday 8 September.
Fairs, Fields and a Living-History Village
Staten Island's Richmond County Fair returns for its 46th year, 5–7 September, at Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Avenue in Richmondtown — a 25-acre open-air museum and living-history village founded in 1856. The fair has been held every Labor Day weekend since 1980 and is the site's primary annual fundraiser, drawing more than 15,000 visitors over three days. You'll find carnival rides, a three-day music festival of Staten Island acts, eating contests and over 100 vendors selling food, handmade goods, antiques and local crafts, alongside demonstrations of blacksmithing, broom making and open-hearth cooking. The Staten Island Culture Crawl sits near the main entrance on Richmond Road.
In Queens, the 17th annual NYC Unicycle Festival takes over Jackson Heights, hosted by Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, with riding events, unicycle basketball, a learn-to-ride area and performances centred on the 34th Avenue Open Street, plus long-distance rides beyond it.
Beach Season's Last Call and the March Through Lower Manhattan
Labor Day weekend is the final stretch of beach season at the Rockaways, Coney Island and the Jersey Shore; lifeguard coverage winds down at city beaches after the holiday, so swim while the flags are still up. Free outdoor theatre, food festivals and neighbourhood block parties run across all five boroughs.
On Tuesday 8 September — the day after the federal holiday — the NYC Central Labor Council holds its Labor Day March, assembling on Liberty Street between Church Street and Broadway. It's a new route, moved from the traditional Fifth Avenue route between 44th and 64th Streets, placing the assembly point closer to City Hall and the civic core.
