Watch the Sky Tower Burn at Midnight
You'll hear the countdown before you see the sky light up. Somewhere below the Sky Tower, thousands of people are packed along the streets and waterfront, phones raised, breath fogging in the warm summer air. At midnight, the tower erupts — Auckland's iconic centrepiece for New Year's Eve, and the single best vantage point is simply being outdoors in the central city with a clear line of sight to it.
The fireworks draw crowds to the city centre, and Auckland Council publishes a city-centre map for New Year's each year to help you navigate the closed streets and viewing areas. Check the current edition before you go so you know where you can stand, walk and cross.
Claim a Rooftop Before the Rush
If you'd rather watch the display with a drink in hand, Auckland's central rooftops fill fast on 31 December. Book ahead and you'll spend midnight above the crowds rather than in them.

Not every good seat is up high. Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen pairs a large outdoor deck with a direct view of the Sky Tower fireworks — live music, craft beer brewed on site and American-style food keep you fed and occupied until the countdown. Across at the Viaduct, Dr Rudi's does the same trick from the harbourside: DJs, roaming entertainment and a balcony that puts you close to the water when the sky goes off.
