Watch the Fløyen Candles Catch at 1pm

On the second Sunday of Advent, 6 December 2026, the city's Christmas countdown reaches its quiet peak on Mount Fløyen. Arrive by 11:00 and the viewpoint plateau belongs to children: pony riding runs until 13:00, then at 13:00 the Advent candle is lit on the plateau itself. Watching is free; the pony rides and Christmas workshop cost NOK 50, paid by Vipps. Ride up on the Fløibanen funicular — buy your ticket in the app or online before you go — and time your descent so you're back in the centre for the afternoon.

The Sunday works in your favour beyond the mountain. It is one of the three last Sundays before Christmas when city-centre shops open 14:00–19:00 (the others are 13 and 20 December), so the streets stay alive well past the candle lighting.

Gingerbread, Gløgg and a Carousel at Festplassen

The Bergen Christmas Market fills Festplassen in the city centre from 20 November to 22 December 2026, and on 6 December it runs 10:00–21:00. Entry is free; the carousels are ticketed separately. Local food and crafts are the draw — this is where you eat your way through the afternoon rather than rush it.

Then walk to Pepperkakebyen, the Gingerbread City, at byROMMET on Kong Oscars gate 24–26. It claims the title of the world's largest gingerbread city, built entirely from citizens' contributions: houses, churches, castles, rockets, oil platforms. On the Sunday it is open 10:00–19:00. Adult tickets are NOK 199, students NOK 149, children under 16 NOK 49 — and children get in free Monday to Friday. A gingerbread heart tasting comes at the end of the tour.

For the full picture, the daily Guided Christmas Walk runs 21 November to 21 December, 16:30–19:00 in English, meeting at the Holberg Statue on Vågsallmenningen. It takes in Bryggen (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the old streets and the Gingerbread City before finishing at the Christmas Market, and includes Pepperkakebyen entry and a hot drink. Adults NOK 895, children 3–15 NOK 545.

Bryggen in December Light

The wharffront at Bryggen is worth a slow pass on any Advent Sunday: decorated market atmosphere, local artists and designers, and cafés to duck into when the damp gets in. Julehuset, the Christmas shop at Bryggen, is open all year but fills two floors with Christmas products through November and December — a place to buy something you'll still have in twenty years. Smaller Christmas markets run across Bergen and the region throughout the season; some 2026 dates are still to be confirmed, so check locally once you arrive. Christmas concerts fill the December calendar too, with a large selection across the city.

Eat Like It's Christmas Eve

Bergen's traditional Christmas dinner is pinnekjøtt — mutton ribs — or fish, or pork ribs, served with sauerkraut, swede, gravy and boiled potatoes. The Norwegian main celebration is Christmas Eve itself, a family meal followed by presents, so if you're in town on the Sunday before, treat the evening as your own rehearsal dinner: find a restaurant serving the traditional plate and take your time. The Christmas Market at Festplassen is the easy daytime option for local food, and the cafés around Bryggen carry you through the dark afternoon.

Plan Around the Sundays

Build your trip around the Advent Sundays rather than fighting them. The candle lightings on Fløyen fall on 29 November, 6 December, 13 December and 20 December 2026, all at 13:00. Sunday shop openings land on 6, 13 and 20 December, 14:00–19:00. From 15 to 23 December, weekday shopping runs until 20:00 (malls 21:00) and Saturdays until 18:00. On 24 December most places close by 13:00, and 25 and 26 December are closed — so if you want the markets, the Gingerbread City and the mountain, aim for early-to-mid December. The Festival of Lights opens the whole season on 14 November around Lille Lungegårdsvann, free and unticketed, ending with fireworks.

Book the Fløibanen ticket and your Gingerbread City entry online, pick the Advent Sunday that fits your dates, and let the rest of the day unfold between the lake, the square and the wharf.
