Light a Candle Above the City on Fløyen
On the fourth Sunday of Advent, 20 December 2026, the ritual happens at 13:00 on the viewpoint plateau of Mount Fløyen: a candle is lit, the fourth and last of the season, completing a run that began on 29 November and continued through 6 and 13 December. It costs nothing to stand and watch, and the timing matters — arrive early enough to ride up on the Fløibanen funicular, tickets booked through the app or online, and you can claim a spot on the plateau before the flame goes up. The programme for the 20th was still to be confirmed at the time of writing, but the earlier Sundays show the pattern: children's activities run beforehand, from story time in Trollskogen (29 November, 11:00–13:00) to pony riding (6 December, 11:00–13:00, NOK 50 by Vipps) to a Christmas workshop (13 December). If snow has settled, the descent becomes a sledging run down the mountain. Whether you walk or ride down, the view over the city's December lights is the point.
Walk Bryggen, Then Eat the City in Gingerbread
Down in the centre, the guided Christmas walk runs daily from 21 November to 21 December, 16:30–19:00, in English, meeting at the Holberg Statue on Vågsallmenningen. The route takes in the UNESCO-listed Bryggen and the old streets, then the Gingerbread City, then the Christmas Market; adults pay NOK 895, children 3–15 NOK 545, and the price includes entry to Pepperkakebyen and a hot drink. The Gingerbread City itself, at byROMMET on Kong Oscars gate 24–26, runs 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 and is billed as the world's largest gingerbread city, assembled from residents' contributions — houses, churches, castles, rockets, oil platforms. Hours are Mon–Fri 09:00–21:00, Sat 09:00–20:00, Sun 10:00–19:00, with varying hours on public holidays and closure on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Tickets are NOK 199 for adults, NOK 149 for students, NOK 49 for under-16s, free for children Mon–Fri, and there are gingerbread hearts to taste at the end of the tour. On the 20th, the walk and the Gingerbread City both fit neatly into the afternoon after the Fløyen candle.
Gløgg, Crafts and a Carousel at Festplassen
The Bergen Christmas Market at Festplassen runs 20 November to 22 December 2026, which means Fourth Advent Sunday falls inside its final stretch. Entry is free; carousel rides are ticketed separately. Hours are Mon–Fri 12:00–21:00 and Sat–Sun 10:00–21:00, so you can start the day there before heading up the mountain and come back for the evening. Local food and crafts are the draw — this is where you eat your way through Advent, and where you buy the things you will carry home. For decorations, Julehuset at Bryggen sells Christmas ornaments year-round and spreads over two floors in November and December. And because the 20th is one of the last three Sundays before Christmas, some shops and malls open 14:00–19:00 that day, even though most of the city otherwise closes on Sundays. Concerts fill the churches and halls throughout December; check listings once you are in town rather than counting on a single fixed date.
When to Go, What to Eat, and How to Spend the Evening
The Fourth Advent Sunday is the last full Sunday before Norway's real celebration, which is Christmas Eve — a family dinner with presents, not the 25th. The traditional Bergen Christmas dinner is pinnekjøtt (mutton ribs), or fish, or pork ribs with sauerkraut, swede, gravy and boiled potatoes; seek it out at the market and in the city's restaurants in the days around the 20th. Shop hours from 15–23 December run until 20:00 on weekdays (21:00 in malls) and 18:00 on Saturdays, with Christmas Eve open only until 13:00 and Christmas Day and Boxing Day closed. If you stay past the 20th, Bergen Cathedral holds services on 24 December at 14:30 and 16:00, and on 25 December at 11:00 in Norwegian. On New Year's Eve, fireworks at midnight are visible across the centre, and the night buses and the Bybanen light rail run all night to get you home.
Make the Centre Your Base
Everything on Fourth Advent Sunday sits within a short walk of each other: Festplassen, the Holberg Statue on Vågsallmenningen, Kong Oscars gate, and the Fløibanen station. Book a bed in the city centre and you can move between the market, the Gingerbread City and the funicular without a bus, then ride up for the 13:00 candle and walk back down into the dark. For a change of scene, the smaller markets scattered around Bergen and the wider region fill out the Advent weeks — some 2026 dates confirmed, others still pending — so ask at the tourist office when you arrive. Start with the Fløyen candle on 20 December and build the day around it; the rest of Bergen's Christmas will arrange itself around your walk.
