Watch the Boat Turn Off the Amstel

Stand on the Weesperzijde just after ten in the morning and the river in front of you fills with traffic that isn't barges: a flotilla carrying Sinterklaas and his Pieten, working up the Amstel from De Omval toward the centre. In 2026 this happens on Sunday 15 November, the day after the national arrival in Grave, when the Sint travels on to the capital and stays until 5 December. The published water route is a set of guidelines rather than a promise: the parade starts at De Omval at 10:15, passes the Berlagebrug and Weesperzijde around 10:30, the Nieuwe Amstelbrug at 10:40, the Hoge Sluis at 10:50, the Amstelsluizen near Theater Carré at 11:05, the Walter Süskindbrug at 11:15 and the Scharrebiersluis at 11:25, reaching Het Scheepvaartmuseum at roughly 11:30. At the National Maritime Museum he is welcomed by deputy mayor Esmah Lahlah and the children's mayor, Ava. Crowds along the water and land routes are expected to reach 300,000 to 350,000, so pick your bridge early and stay put rather than chasing the boat.

Follow the Horse from Waterlooplein to Leidseplein

The land procession sets off at 13:00 from Waterlooplein, by the Stopera, with Sinterklaas riding his horse Ozosnel alongside Pieten, musicians and floats. The route runs past Rembrandtplein at about 13:15, down the Utrechtsestraat at 13:20, Frederiksplein at 13:35 and the Weteringcircuit at 13:55, with the programme beginning on Leidseplein at 13:45. The procession reaches Leidseplein from around 14:15, Sinterklaas arrives at roughly 14:45 to address the children, and a music and dancing party carries on until 15:30. Treat every time as approximate; arrivals can run early or late. If you want the full sweep, position yourself on the Utrechtsestraat for the passing and then walk down to Leidseplein for the speech and the music.

Eat Pepernoten While the City Waits

From 15 November to 5 December, the traditional sweets of the season are sold in shops across the city. Look for pepernoten and kruidnootjes (small spiced biscuits), marsepein and chocolate letters — the last a fixture of Dutch shop windows in these weeks. This is also the stretch when Sinterklaasjournaal, the daily television programme, airs on NPO Zapp at around 18:00, from 9 November through 5 December. If you are travelling with children, the daily broadcast is as much a part of the visit as the parade.

Sing on Pakjesavond

The season peaks on Saturday 5 December 2026, St. Nicholas' Eve, known in the Netherlands as pakjesavond — the gift evening. Families sing Sinterklaas songs to prompt the giving of presents, and the festivities are denser in Amsterdam and the other big cities than in smaller places. St. Nicholas Day itself falls the next day, Sunday 6 December. The older customs still run alongside the modern party: children put a shoe out with an apple or carrot for Sinterklaas's horse and find a present the next morning, and the Sint is understood to have arrived by boat from Spain with his Pieten. Ask at your accommodation about local celebrations, and expect the city's restaurants and cafés to be busy as families mark the evening.

Know What Else Is Happening That Weekend

The national arrival is not in Amsterdam in 2026. It takes place on Saturday 14 November at Maaskade in Grave, North Brabant, from 12:00 to 16:00, with the steamboat docking around noon, a welcome from Mayor Marieke Moorman and a procession to the Markt, broadcast live on NPO Zapp from 12:00. If you want to see both, note that Grave has no train station; you reach it by bus from Nijmegen, Oss or Cuijk, and from Amsterdam that means travelling via one of those cities. The open boat visits, Pakjesbootdagen, run in Grave from 15 to 18 November, with timed slots and online booking required. Other arrivals that same weekend — Texel/Oudeschild on 14 November and Cuijk on 15 November — are separate events. Carry valid ID: the Netherlands reinstated internal border checks with Belgium and Germany, and UK passports must have been issued less than ten years before arrival and remain valid for at least three months beyond your Schengen exit.

Plan around the Sunday: book your stay near the Amstel or the Leidseplein corridor so you can walk the water route in the morning and the procession in the afternoon, leave the evening free for pepernoten and the Sinterklaasjournaal, and keep 5 December clear if you want to see the city at its most domestic. Check the route times the day before you travel — they are guidelines, and the city fills early.
