Watch the canals catch fire at the Amsterdam Light Festival
On the evening of 1 January, the city is still lit for the Amsterdam Light Festival, which runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027. Illuminated artworks are installed along the canals and streets, so the most rewarding thing you can do on New Year's Day is simply walk or boat the waterways after dark, when the installations glow against the water and the bridges are packed with people doing exactly the same. Pair the lights with Le Foodwalk, running 26 November 2026 to 18 January 2027 (subject to change): a self-guided food walk tied to the festival, with the option of an early or late dinner at selected restaurants along the route.
Lace up at Museumplein, then thaw out at the RAI
Two of the city's biggest winter fixtures are open on 1 January, and both are built for a slow, cold, happy first day of the year.
- Museumplein Ice Rink — open 14 November 2026 to 3 February 2027, set on Museumplein between the Rijksmuseum, the Concertgebouw and the Van Gogh Museum. Skate with those three buildings as your backdrop, then retreat indoors.
- Amsterdam Winter Wonderland / Winter Paradijs — 16 December 2026 to 2 January 2027 at Amsterdam RAI, Europaplein 24. Winter activities and Christmas atmosphere, open on New Year's Day itself.
- World Christmas Circus at Carré Theater — 16 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, Amstel 115/125. A family tradition of clowns and acrobats that runs straight through New Year's Day.
Eat your way through the first day of the year
Amsterdam's New Year's Day eating is a matter of drifting between warm rooms. The Le Foodwalk restaurants tied to the Light Festival give you a structured route with a booked dinner slot, early or late. If you'd rather keep it loose, the city's major museums are open with their January programmes — the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, plus smaller venues like FOAM Photography Museum and the Grachtenhuis — and each has a café to sit out the afternoon in. For something further afield, Winter Castle Muiderslot (Herengracht 1, Muiden) is open during all the holidays, 9 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, and makes a half-day excursion with a meal attached.
Keep the momentum going into January
New Year's Day is the start of a month that stays busy, so you can build a longer trip around it. The IJ-hallen flea market — described as Europe's largest — runs Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 January at NDSM-Plein 1. André Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra give their New Year's Concert on Saturday 9 January at De Passage 100. National Tulip Day takes over Museumplein on Saturday 16 January from 13:00, the 13th edition, with a free tulip-picking garden and around 17,000 visitors from roughly 100 nationalities. The Record & CD Fair fills the RAI on Sunday 17 January, 10:00–17:00. Later in the month come The Maker Market at De Hallen (23–24 January, free admission), the String Quartet Biennale at Muziekgebouw (23–30 January, date not confirmed), Jumping Amsterdam at the RAI (28–31 January), the Design in Motion Festival on 80 screens at Amsterdam Centraal on 28 January, and The Tea Festival at Het Sieraad on 30 January, 11:00–19:00 (subject to change).
Time it right, and know what the city does not do
Come for the overlap: the Light Festival and the ice rink are both running on 1 January, the circus and Winter Paradijs close within days of it, and the January calendar above keeps you occupied for weeks after. Note that the events listings carry no official municipal tourism programme or parade for New Year's Day, and several January dates are flagged "subject to change" or still without a confirmed date — check venue sites before you commit. The Begijnhof's English Reformed Church publishes its January classical concert programme on its own website, and Club Birdies (Pilotenstraat 41), with twelve TruGolf simulators plus a bar and restaurant, stays open year-round if the weather turns.
Book the flights and the hotel first, then build the days around the rink, the lights and whichever January date you refuse to miss. Amsterdam on the first of the year rewards the traveller who arrives with a loose plan and warm shoes.
